Hosting Decisions
« on: June 29, 2011, 05:32:24 PM »
I have had a look at my hosting life and it appears to be a bit of a mess, lots of outdated software version, eg php4.

I have various servers with DSVR / Demon and their support is not great for this sort of thing, plus they are expensive.

I think I need to start again.

Is there any decent UK based server suggestions that probably have cpanel, for each of backup next time round. Rolling IP's maybe.

I would like to be able to maybe add bulk domains, but that is not a killer.

I want to be able to give jonny remote worker access to cetain domains maybe so they can do work. Or even dedicate one to a particular site type.

Any suggestions appreciated, support is nice, security is better. But is has t be farely longterm, i dont want to be messing around as they have gone bust etc.

http://www.futurehosting.com/

We have two VPS with them, with WHM/cpanel - they offer UK or US locations.

We have had a couple of minor issues, but both times had great support from them.
They have a decent enough reputation on Webhostingtalk - and usually offers with decent enough discounts on there.

Sorry not in uk, and only loosely on target, but slicehost has been pretty cool so far. I think they got purchased by rackspace, but they are a bit cheaper and the guys working for me seem to really like them.

I've been using http://www.clook.co.uk/ for many a year. You will get cPanel over there and the support is about as good as I've experienced from a host (and I've suffered a few)...

I have only heard good things about VPS.net. They have a real solid infrastructure

Clook are hard to beat.  We've used most of the big hosts and way too many of the smaller ones over the years.  Clook currently host 5 dedicated servers, a clutch of VPSs and a few shared hosting accounts that I am involved with and they do so very well. Best of all their support is blinding.

We're really trying not to use them for everything, but I'm struggling to find others as good.

(no... not affiliated in any way)

I used clook for about 3 years

They were exceptionally good, but very overpriced compare to others out there.

Their top reseller account had only 7GB for £40 a month!!! - incredibly stingy, for the same money you can get a VPS with 10 times as much space from Futurehosting.

Having said that, no denying that service levels are good - there are very few good UK hosts IMO, and I would use Clook again if I needed to spread a few important smaller sites about.

The price of Clook was a bit high when I looked, especially as these are for "ahem", sh## sites.

Considering 1and1 actually. I have one dedicated server with them and it has been stable.

Colin, did you pay the extra "insurance" for over bandwidthe due to threat of DDOSing?

Nope - not sure it was an option when I signed up for our servers - if it was I missed it - not sure whether I would sign up or not.

BTW, if you are thinking of using Futurehosting, I should tell you that they are about to relocate all their servers to a different data center (in July and August). Supposedly, this is a reaction to a few problems earlier in the year when they didn't get the support level they felt they needed from the current DC.

re: 1and1 - I wouldn't touch them with a shitty stick - had LOADS of problems with them, and when I tried to cancel had to to threaten them with legal action to stop them threatening me with legal action over unpaid bills that were not unpaid - 100% Arseholes

BTW, Are you really sure you need UK?
I am hosting all over the place and see no real difference on my ebay stuff, (which is almost al UK targeted).

Depends what you want it for of course - ping me on skype if you want a natter.

I have had good experience with Krystal.co.uk.

No problems to talk of in 3 years and when I have contacted them they have always come back with well thought out help.

Similar feelings to above with regards to 1and1.  I think them and clook are probably close to the 2 ends of the spectrum!  Had additionally heard people complaining about their Uk hosting being in Germany.

If you are after something in the middle you could try webhosting.uk.com . We have a few bits and bobs with them and they have been OK so far.  No tech issues with them so far and live chat support has always been knowlegeable and responsive when we have needed it.
