2 years ago I started looking into the more technical side of OpenID and OAuth, and ran across a company called JanRain, that impressed me as having enterprise level OpenSocial solutions...

http://www.janrain.com

... and now I see they added 'free' and 'cheap' solutions into the mix, allowing 'guests' of any site (even this one) to sign up/in with their GMail, Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, etc. accounts... which would make any site with a login area more attractive in a number of ways to a user sitting somewhere on the proverbial fence.

This is just one of those things (if you own a site that requires your users to enter a name, or create an account) that should make you stop everything you are doing and spend a day (or some money) to get something like this hooked up to your site.  Your conversion rate should jump, and you will look like a rock star for spotting the lowest hanging fruit on the tree because done right, this is an easy/cheap 10% for just about any site.

This is timely DB, I have been planning to post about the same, wondering if anyone has tried janrain or gigya which is similar.

We've been using FB connect and Twitter oAuth for a while now on a few sites and it has definitely lowered the barrier to getting people to sign up and then share updates.  Facebook much more than Twitter, but who's to say what social login people will most prefer in the future.  This is why these are attractive solutions that we're currently investigating for integration into our custom publishing platform.

Anyone tried either of these?

Thanks DB

Our existing registration and commenting system blows so we were considering making the switch to Disqus, either VIP or free, so we could take advantage of FB/Twitter/OpenID/anonymous commenting.

I'll check these guys out

Welcome back DB!  ;D

Isn't JanRain the company that started this whole OpenID thing off? They may not have been first, but they were certainly quite involved.

Yeah, JanRain has been a major contributor to the OpenID efforts.

If my memory serves, I think SixApart came up with OpenID in the first place, quickly and heavily supported by JanRain.

Hey boys:) Sorry I didnt respond sooner... I didn't use the 'Additional Options' link to 'Notify me of replies'. (Suggestion: maybe that 'Additional Options' link should be open from the gitgo, so you can see options... and might as well check 'notify' by default just to make sure no one assumed it was on/didnt know that option existed.)

Anyway, from what I remember, whoever started janrain was also deeply tied into this 'movement'. And from what I could gather, was trying to capitalize on it financially very early.  I remember there was a little push-back, and they deleted his company's name in the Wiki article on them ...that kind of thing.  But back when people first started really talking about OpenID, janrain was not only issuing them themselves, but also selling the ability for OTHER companies to issue them, using their own domains.  That's pretty serious crap.

And you also have to remember, the people that came up with these standards, etc. are not your typical average gaggle of geeks.  In fact, if you found a geek that was soo geeky that he thought of himself as normal... even that guy would call those guys geeks:) So this company was a rare breed in that it was trying to make the technology consumer friendly (~55% functional/45% pretty.)  That's why it is nice to see they evolved and are now providing these SMB solutions.

...but, again, to me, this is just a huge opportunity for site owners.  This is what we have been waiting for.  Done right, in certain circumstances/industries, targeting certain audiences, this could add 20% easy to your immediate bottom-line... not to mention the viral component.

When OpenID was first being discussed I set up a few identity servers  of my own using open source and/or free tools. I didn't actually use them as much as I thought I might.

The enterprise JanRain product you're linking to here is something along the line of allowing new signups  for multiple services (anyone who supports OpenID I would guess.) It reminds me of the AddThis buttons you could throw on your articles to get a whole slew of social bookmarking links.

I have used the gigya tool bar but actually prefer wibiya. People have been interacting with the bar logging into facebook and twitter and sharing stuff through it on our sites with no added value for doing so other than sharing a product or page with their pals. I think it is well worth adding to a site that can benefit from interactive social media marketing. I haven't utilised open id to login in to any of our sites actual functionality yet but agree the benefits are clear in many cases.
