Woocommerce vs Prestashop
« on: May 30, 2013, 01:53:55 PM »
Hi,

If there are any e-commerce gurus, specialists, enthusiasts or even just someone with relevant knowledge out there, I would appreciate some advice.
I am about to start up my first e-commerce store and would like some advice on the advantages/disadv of using either platforms: Prestashop & Woocommerce. I know that Woocommerce is relatively new and is termed a "plugin" as opposed to a full-fledged e-commerce platform like Prestashop. I have personally heard of the praises of both platforms, but I'd really like some help in understanding which is better in starting off my store.

I know that because Woocommerce is built on the Wordpress platform, stability and robustness etc are impeccable, but I'm concerned that because it is termed a "plugin" and not a "dedicated" software, that it may be problematic where scalability is concerned (meaning, the ability to handle heavy growth, e.g. 50,000+ products/skus) though access to themes and plugins are heavenly.

Prestashop however, has the full scale ecommerce capability but access to plugins and themes etc are a bit, well... a lot less convenient than Woocommerce, which may require lots of custom work---and for a non-programmer like me, it may cost handsomely and money at the moment, is a premium.

So is it worth it going with Prestashop? what are the ins and outs? or should I go with Woocommerce?

Thanks!

Hey Blazer,  I'm not an expert on either but I selected Prestashop for my new project.  It seems to have a lot of things going for it.  So far I like it a lot, it is easy to install, easy to configure.  I've modified the default theme to make it somewhat warmer, but there are some nice templates available.

What attracted me to Prestashop over Woocomerce is that it is not based on Wordpress, which frankly is a liability I'd like to avoid if possible.  Wordpress is great, but it is so wide spread that it is a giant target that needs to be updated all the time or it becomes very vulnerable.

Thanks Littleman,

I agree, but besides the security issue with Wordpress, what are your thoughts on Woocommerce as a platform for launching a online business with the potential for huge growth? I also fully agree that Prestashop is great, but the support is not as easily accessible as wordpress' support... at least in my opinion. Any thoughts?

I'm not really qualified to say.  Maybe someone else will chime in.

Thanks littleman, I still do appreciate your input... and yes, I have Torben but I started this new thread to try to get some new insight specifically on this comparison between Prestashop and Woocommerce.

I really like Woocommerce - it's so simple and easy to use. The 2.0 version is a nice update and has a pretty comprehensive range of plugins.

If you're happy with Wordpress, it's worth considering. If you're not happy with Wordpress, then obviously not. I think that's the only sales point for you.

I've never had scalability issues with WP either, and so long as the software remains up to date - which *any* install should do - and you take normal ordinary precautions, then security should be fine.

FYI there's a new free plugin that links kashflow (accounting system you don't end up fighting with) with woocommerce.
Its my now new favourite setup to get sites off the ground and to get the cash flowing before looking for more advance systems

I think Prestashop is more flexible and gives more opportunities.
Here are some pros of this shopping cart:
  • Open source
  • Good speed
  • Creating templates is simple using smarty template engine
  • Many add ons and templates
  • Back office fairly simple to use
  • Creating templates and modules requires a small learning curve

Prestashop is a great platform without a doubt, limited in terms of design out of the box but that depends on your designer and the woo commerce themes although many are good none are amazing yet (please feel to correct me and post good themes  ;)). My experience is with woo commerce rather than prestashop and this is why...

The flexibility provided by wordpress and the plugins surrounding it is huge, the fact you can tie this in with your ecommerce doubles the opportunity and there are some fantastic plugins. Ecommerce sites are tough to spec out of the box as everyone has their own individual needs from product specifications, forms, variations, shipping equations to addons like gift lists, social vouchers etc. You normally only find the limitations once you start building and playing with it which can end up leading you into weeks of unexpected development. With woo commerce & wordpress chances are there is a plugin for that and you can have it up running and even adapted quickly and easily.

I wouldn't be put off by woo commerce being a plugin, it isn't like the others, it was originally created by the jigo shop boys and they structured it well from the start, ran beta groups etc and even in development it was impressive, just what I had been looking for, for years. Don't be fooled it is a great ecommerce platform in its own right it is just built on the wordpress platform.

I have not run it through the mill with a large database but others have here and said it has passed (should be on another thread somewhere) however this is a real consideration. Now as it is wordpress it is likely to be more resource intensive than presta shop depending on how fancy you want to make it. So it depends on your focus, what is more important to you, customer conversion, brand loyalty, flexibility and freedom or a numbers game, stack em high, keep it simple and running fast. If it is the latter I would go for prestashop otherwise I would give woocommerce a go.

Hope this helps

In order to make a right decision, you should compare pros and cons of both carts. Firstly, let's talk about PrestaShop.
Main benefits of Prestashop shopping cart are:
1. Intuitive admin panel. Platform is easy to use from backend and storefront. So, your customers will get a positive shopping experience.
2. Customizable. No limitations in quantity of products, users, orders. Over 310 default features.
3. SEO and Marketing tools.  Marketing features like coupon codes, discounts, etc. Google analytics will help to track the results of promotion campaigns, conversion rate, sales, etc.
Cons: not stable after major upgrades, some important extensions are available only for additional costs.

Main advantages of WooCommerce:
1. Possibility to sell physical and digital products.
2. Additional opportunities, since WooCommerce is WordPress CMS plugin (possibility to set up a forum, blog)
3. Secure customer account, robust tax settings and options, discount coupons.
Drawbacks: lack of languages, currencies, shipping methods, inability to add product variants.
Its a really short comparison. I would advise you to find more detailed information in order to make a right decision.
