Title: Quarantine entertainment
Post by: Travoli on March 28, 2020, 07:51:18 PM
What are y'all doing to stay busy during shelter-in-place?

I binged "Tiger King" on Netflix. Seven episode documentary. I couldn't stop watching and I think a lot of folks here would enjoy it. (For mature audiences.)

Taking a Udemy course on Fusion 360 (CAD software).

Running more - personal theory that aerobic/mitochondrial conditioning would be helpful if infected with COVID19.

I've been binging on audiobooks, currently listening to some speeches and essays by Martin Luther King Jr.. Powerful stuff!

My iPad plus a set of Bose wireless headphones are a much-used combo these days.

As I listen I've been cleaning, mending, baking, all sorts of odd jobs. Mostly maintenance tasks so far, but I have ideas for some new creative projects. It's almost like the nesting instinct that comes late in pregnancy!

I'm finding it tough to get motivated for website work but at least I have worked out a to-do list.

I've been teaching this guy a couple of things. Now that he's finally starting to show some promise ;-)

https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/fq4lb0/this_guys_quarantine_is_going_great_apparently/

Huge amount of talking on the phone. Now that so many people have time on their hands, they are calling. And there are some friends and family I worry about getting lonely (my father lives alone), so trying to call more.

Also walking/skiing in the neighborhood, snow shoveling, cooking more, some TV but noticing the percentage of things on Netflix or Prime that are dystopian or (usually and) violent. Having trouble finding "fun" things to watch.

Reading Solitary, but Albert Woodfox
Listening to Snowcrash, Neil Stephenson

I'd like to find a game to addict me.  Local only. Windows or chromebook, preferably both.  FPS might work, but I don't like quests or cartoonish graphics.  Minecraft bores me. Maybe a a driving game.

Logging a tree.
Shutting down everything I can to reduce outgoings.
Watching Dads army. (Seen it before, but Daughters favourite. light English humour)
Watching Darling Buds of May. (Again very old light humour. nothing Dark or dystopian)
Walking.
Eating too much.
Reading Robin Hobbs. (not enough, if you like fantasy and have not read her work, its good imho)
Family Zoom. (Yes, agree its great)
Starting work on a veg garden.
Volunteered for the NHS support.
In the local help group, so started doing bits of shopping for the vulnerable, inc my Mum.
Loads of phone time.
General house maintenance.

That last one is something that needs doing, and has been neglected for the last 3 years. Planning a new Shed. I built a small one last year, from packing cases. A chap from Gumtree supplied the design and the wood.  so I am planning a bigger one. I need to work out the size and shape, and he delivers it with the drawings.  He cannot deliver at present, but he can quote and start getting it ready for me  .

I know we are so lucky to have space about. 2 of my nieces are holed up in flats... with their boyfriends fortunately, all trying to work in different ways. Sue is also helping Lucy with her degree. I read what I am allowed.

We are still working in the great state of SC, and signing new business, somehow. (Everyone has their own office and we are distancing in the conference room. No handshakes, etc.)

Aside from that, I opened the pool this weekend. (Up to 68 F yesterday, you ready?) I should have all motorcycles serviced and ready to go in record time. Finally going to tweak some things in the home theater I've been looking at. If I'm lucky the ground is dry enough to rip through the woods behind the house for a bit.

We are repainting our kitchen cabinets and the backsplash tile. Going nice and slow on it but hopefully we will have our kitchen back in 2-3 days.

I got 6 grills in the backyard that need a good, thorough cleaning after the winter.

Going to start getting the garden beds ready to plant somewhat soon. Raspberries are already in place, going to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, maybe some collard greens, strawberries, and maybe a few other vegetables.

Still working the day job. All our office workers are working from home and our warehouses have been deemed "essential" so while sales have been a bit slow it is pretty much business as usual.

And I have about 10 posts I need to write on my meat blog.

And did I mention trying to keep the kids and wife sane?

Not so easy!  We are 5 in a townhouse; I think we've all had our moments of insanity.

If you haven't already, get your seeds & seedlings asap. My readers have had headlines about panic buying for home gardens wiping out inventories.

I just finished a major construction project on March 10. If I had known, I would have waited.

We did a major soundproofing between floors - ripped out 700 square feet of ceilings, pulled down all the cabinets, light fixtures, heating ducts, bathroom fan etc, and then added a soundproofing system (ceiling hanging from furring strips attached to rubber "rafts" to break the connection to the joists) and... redid the ceilings (two layers of drywall with Green Glue sound absorbing glue in between), changed out the light fixtures (no cans - they transmit sound), boxed in the bathroom fan, painted, put the cabinet back in and cleaned up. That's the biggest home construction project I've done on my own (with friends offering many hours of help though).

Anyway, now I plotting a few followup projects with the fairly substantial amount of leftover material

>Why so many?

They are all charcoal grills but I have 4 different sized Weber Kettles for different sizes of cooks. The 18 inch one is good for a few pieces of chicken, hot dogs, etc. all the way up to the 36 inch Ranch Kettle which can hold 30 pounds of pork belly, 6+ pork butts, 3 briskets, 2 spatchcocked turkeys, etc..   And a PK Grill which I like better for direct grilling. Just a bunch of different tools that ultimately accomplish the same thing.

>get your seeds & seedlings asap

This is one of my projects for the week. I just drove by Home Depot to get a couple things I need to finish the kitchen project and was going to look at the garden center but the parking lot was as packed as it is on a normal weekend so I just kept right on driving. Might look online and see what I can find.

Snowcrash
We've been listening to Snowcrash together while cooking, cleaning. We had both read the book over 20 years ago, but had forgotten most of it. It's astounding that it was written in 1992.

The main idea is that it is about a computer virus that becomes a mind virus... much like Buckworks recent comment about stupidity being viral. But there's a lot more that feels very 2020. Time ranked it one of the 100 best novels in English.

Solitary
It might seem like an odd choice, but I also just finished Solitary, the story of Albert Woodfox, who spends 40 years in solitary confinement in Louisiana for a murder that all evidence suggests he did not commit. He was basically a political prisoner, punished for being an activist. Without going into a lot of detail, I'll just say that it was a National Book Award finalist and challenged several of my beliefs and preconceptions.

Walden
I also achieved a minor life goal of reading Walden. I have tried many times over the last 37 years (I would guess I have started it seven times). I used to run around Walden Pond after work when I was a coop programmer at MITRE in 1983-84. Time and again I have been defeated by the fundamental, colossal boredom of Walden. Finally, quarantine gave me the patience to read it. It is not on my must read, but now I can finally donate my copy of the Walden that I have been carting around all these years while it sat on my shelf mocking me.
