Remdesivir is an antiviral medication; a nucleotide analog, specifically an adenosine analogue, which inserts into viral RNA chains, causing their premature termination. It is being studied during 2020 as a possible post-infection treatment for COVID-19 illness.

7:47 am: Gilead rockets 12% in premarket trading on virus treatment hopes
Gilead Sciences soared more than 12% in the premarket session Friday after a report said that its drug remdesivir proved effective in treating the coronavirus. STAT news reported Thursday evening that a Chicago doctor treating those with the virus with the drug in a trial said her patients were recovering rapidly from severe symptoms. Though Gilead cautioned in a statement to Reuters that such anecdotal reports do not prove remdesivir's efficacy, the company said more rigorous trials should show more certain results by the end of April.

I was reading somewhere that what makes CV19 hard to treat is that it does much of the damage while it is still technically outside the body. When it attacks the lungs its doing so on the surface, damaging those on the top layer and then it works its way down.

Trump doctors have initiated the antiviral drug remdesivir
So, we can interpolate from this that remdesivir is currently the best treatment available.
<+>
In June, the drugmaker behind the medication, Gilead Sciences, announced it would charge $520 per vial of remdesivir for patients with private insurance. This would make a five-day treatment course cost $3,120, although for developed countries outside the U.S. it would be nearly $800 cheaper.

I don't think we can interpolate anything. I think they are throwing the polyclonal and remdesivir at him because they are not shown to do harm and might do good and they are doing everything they can to stack the odds in his favor. Cost is no issue, so an unproven treatment is no problem as long as it is reasonably safe over the short term.
True, we can't say whether it is an effective treatment or just politics, but my point was that among the short list of options, the docs chose remdesivir. I was sorta expecting plasma therapy.
