Title: Gaming foursquare merchants
Post by: dogboy on April 12, 2011, 01:37:29 PM
I'm interested in these social checkin apps and I just downloaded foursquare.

From my couch at home, I tried to checkin and see what was near so I could play with the app.

I found a pizza place close by with an ad that says checkin 4 times and you get a free personal pie.

Ok:) hehe

Next on my list, free tire rotation w a cheap oil change.

Ok:) hehe

...all from my couch. Granted the tire place doesn't care, but the pizza place would. They need some kind of safeguard in place or else these ads will be short lived.

I wonder how often people order just a personal pie. Or how many would be audacious enough to check in 24 times and feed the whole family on six personal pies. I wouldn't be surprised if they make money in the long run even on people who repeatedly order the personal pie.

The new FourSquare app seems to be a bit more dialed in to the GPS of the phone. They will let you check in, but not receive any points/credit for the visit if you're a certain distance away.

Your free pizza days are over dogboy!

But which 'new' app are you using? Andriod? iPhone?

This is the iPhone app from foursquare itself. That's the primary one used in Japan, and I'm assuming it's the same one used elsewhere. I'm not sure if this would affect other apps.

Bottom line: never set your apps to "auto-update"  ;)

Good call Zwart.

Anyone know if it's possible to download and install older versions of the foursquare app? I wish I could revert back about 6 months or so. This new version blows.
