Closer to home. My local daily newspaper is ceasing print after 136 years on Dec. 30, 2020 mainly due to the impact of Covid 19. Website future being discussed. The closure of the print paper puts all delivery drivers and paper boys/girls out of jobs. It's very sad.
I don't know if you saw, but on "giving Tuesday" the NYT issued a statement saying, roughly, "Like a lot of the media giants, we're doing well, maybe better than ever, but local papers are struggling. Don't give money to us. Go support your local paper if you've still got one."
Also, research has shown that losing a local paper means that local government becomes less efficient - more likely to give special tax breaks to donors, more likely to get caught up in corruption scandals, more likely to award sweetheart deal contracts. Some even claim that it costs citizens more in taxes and inefficiencies than it costs to keep the papers going in some cases.
One bright spot: our local paper is actually *hiring*. In a county o f 18,000, I think they've added two journalists, not including the teenage son of the editor/publisher who has also started writing.
