Title: 'Deepfake is the future of content creation' - BBC
Post by: rcjordan on March 08, 2021, 03:00:01 AM
"A few months ago, millions of TV viewers across South Korea were watching the MBN channel to catch the latest news.

At the top of the hour, regular news anchor Kim Joo-Ha started to go through the day's headlines. It was a relatively normal list of stories for late 2020 - full of Covid-19 and pandemic response updates.

Yet this particular bulletin was far from normal, as Kim Joo-Ha wasn't actually on the screen. Instead she had been replaced by a 'deepfake' version of herself"

Anybody come across a link to the actual video?

There's a YouTube link at the bottom of the article I linked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oyyhl4nU2OE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBM3Qkgbt-s

What I would like to see is a side-by-side. Her face seems rather static... but maybe that's just the way Kim Joo-Ha's face is for all I know.

There is also a recent deepfake of Tom Cruise that was profe$$ionally produced using an actor already known for his portrayal of Cruise.

"it was openly the work of a talented creator of "deepfakes", AI-generated video clips that use a variety of techniques to create situations that have never happened in the real world.

Despite being open about its falseness, the account's videos are so realistic that they still prompted wild speculation. Commercial tools for recognising deepfakes cleared the clips as "authentic""

Thanks RC. Looks like the first YT link is the deep fake and the second is the real deal?  In the first video she is basically looking straight at the camera wood-like with an occasional blink, but the second video she looks much more human with lots of subtle movements.   It is still probably the best deep fake I've seen yet.

Hmmm... I thought they were both fakes. The both look "off" to me. A little Uncanny Valley

Yup... both fakes.

Here you go with a back and forth demo with the human and the AI Joo-Ha....

https://pop.inquirer.net/102065/south-korea-cable-channel-debuts-its-first-ai-news-anchor

It becomes clear how much more natural the human version is when you see this. More expensive too.

Wow, Ergo, that second one is enough to fool me.  There are bits when she's sitting down, turning her head and messing with papers while having a conversation.

Check out this bit:
https://youtu.be/MBM3Qkgbt-s?t=2264

Seems much better than say the stuff they've been doing in the Star Wars franchise.

That's a quick take, fairly distant. I think that's easier to pull off without flags. It's the times she is standing and when you see her face where it feels off to me. When she's sitting and it's not zoomed in to see the facial expression, like in the clip you posted, I would be 100% faked out.

I think if I weren't on the alert, I would also be entirely faked out by the others. I wish I had seen it and been told they were auditions and they were asking the audience to rate which newscasters the liked better. I think in that case I would miss completely which was AI and which was human, but I would find the AI newscasters less likeable.

I just find the motions and postures while standing and the facial expressions just not quite right. But more like "that person is odd" than "that is a fake" if you know what I mean.

I expect that by 2025, only the most astute and well-trained human observers will be able to tell them apart at better than random and by 2030 we'll all be downvoting the human as odd and just a little wooden.

> expect that by 2025

I have mentioned before that I think this will totally disrupt celebrity jobs.  At some point, a far-thinking studio will AI-generate new, unique digital individuals. Then use them in production from the git-go.  Voice actors will be at a premium for a while ....until 'deepvoice' is perfected.

But why?  Why have fake newscasters?

>Why have fake newscasters?

We posted at the same time. See above.

Essentially, the studios will own the digital actor, much like an animation.

Short answer: Cheaper.  No messy humans.

This tech really gets rid of a lot of ethical/legal issues in porn production.

But why?  Why have fake newscasters?

Realize that most short business stories and most local sports are already written by AI. So any story about what happened to the stock price of company X or the two-paragraph story about some youth sports match are already at least first-draft written by AI.

When you couple this with newscasters, that becomes fully automated and can crank out a story "live" anytime day or night.

Also, as RC pointed out, the writers in the newsroom get paid a lot less than the faces. At a small station where the faces are the writers, there might not be a payoff for a long time

Sometimes I'll watch some TV nostalgia on YT and see some presenters that were visibly younger 'back in the day'.

It'd be interesting to know if they'd let their AI show natural ageing. It'd be weird watching TV from 20 years ago and seeing the same 'person' look exactly how they are now, giving no frame of reference of time.

OTOH, I think that will be part of the allure of creating actors that remain the same.  When I think of -say- Clint Eastwood, I remember him as if he was still Dirty Harry age.

True. Watched his last one and he's definitely getting up there in age, a wee bit past his prime

I suppose people who are no longer alive could also be used. Maybe contentious, but novel.

Prince had a strict ban on his music being online.

Quote...back to 2007 when a mother uploaded a video on YouTube of her children dancing to Prince's song Let's Go Crazy. Although the video was only 29 seconds long and barely audible, Prince demanded that his music be taken off YouTube, saying that he intended to "reclaim his art on the internet."
https://thehustle.co/heres-cant-find-prince-music-online/

That changed soon after his death, now all his music is free flowing on streaming platforms and his videos are all on youtube.  I guess whoever inherited his estate wanted to cash in.
