Also, what separated Department Stores (Sears) vs. discount stores (Walmart) used to be face to face service. That gets forgotten or blurred these days in the race to the bottom. Amazon has little experience in face to face customer service and I doubt they want to pay for it.
I think this is a bad move. With the exception of some elders, I don't know anyone who *wants* to go in a store.

I'm with ya. Being old and a guy, I hate stores. But I can't speak for young people or women, who seem to like to try clothes on and shop for some reason.
This isn't really going to be a real department store: I'll bet no tool section and no hunting gear or sports stuff. Nor will this be about Amazon's house brand mouthwash. This is about clothes, dry goods, small appliances, décor and stuff.

As this is one of my frequent rants (mostly around the house, but I'm sure I've ranted about it here at least a few time) - customer service doesn't scale. So when the business model is "automate and scale," it is de facto a business model that is not based around good customer service.
