Title: Meta threatens to pull Facebook and Instagram from the European market
Post by: rcjordan on February 05, 2022, 09:36:02 PM
This is from a single source, without confirmation. So wait & see.

Still, with the current wave of EU privacy regulations, they'd be serving the market for much lower $ returns.

Are Europeans as addicted to FB as Americans?

I've read that UK is 2nd behind US, but since Brexit they don't fall under the EU regs.  Debbie says the EU as a whole is probably 3rd now exceeds the UK.

IIRC, Zuck used the pull-out threat in AU about 18 months ago.  Something about a tax or had to share revenues with newspapers.

AU flinched first.

Another headline but from another unfamiliar source.

Mark Zuckerberg and team consider shutting down Facebook and Instagram in Europe if Meta can not process Europeans' data on US servers

Growing legs...

Meta states in an SEC filing it is considering leaving Europe if it can no longer exchange data from European users with the United States, following the Schrems II decision.

Trying to wrap my mind around what that would look like assuming the EU doesn't cave like Australia did.

Is Europe geofenced and Europeans can't view IG/FB? Is it just that ads can no longer be targeted and so FB/IG stop European ad sales? I don't understand how one "pulls" a website from one market without having a Great Chinese Firewall.
