Within the last couple days, we literally had this exchange:

wife: "X has a 3D printer. He could print it for us."
me: "The problem is we don't have the CAD files. That's the hard part."
wife: "Someday we'll be able to just point a camera at the original and copy it."

Khan "exhibits 2-dimensional thinking" --Spock "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"

I have worked with 3d-ish software (Sketchup) and created 3d floorplans.  But I am really 2d like Khan.  It is not that I couldn't pick up how to build the objects but that I wouldn't use the printer enough to stay proficient at it.  I just don't want another rabbit-hole.

I'd buy the Ender 3 Pro printer in a heartbeat if I had a decent scanner that would jump me to the 'modify this object' stage.

https://www.scandy.co/apps/scandy-pro

"Scandy Pro enables anyone to create high resolution, full-color 3D scans with iPhone X series, iPhone 11 series, and iPhone 12 series devices."

I tested it on a motorcycle helmet 12/2020. Surprisingly good, and color.

Geez... there are an increasing number of moments when I think, "That thing I can get delivered within the week is like that thing in [fill in sci-fi movie/book]"

You're of a certain age now.  Get used to it.

Remember the gesture and multi-touch screens in the Minority Report?  Old tech now.

Me, I'm waiting for a Mr. Fusion.
