I WISH my suv got 16mpg. But to be fair, I bought it years before the first $4/gallon spike in 2008.

History does not repeat, but people do. I'm always amazed at how fast after a gas price shock that gas guzzler sales recover, especially given the increasing length of ownership for cars.
But, as a law enforcement friend said once, you are trying to explain the future to someone and people are bad about seeing the future. The context being, someone is trying to decide to flee or throw a punch or throw a ticket on the fire and you say, "You can only make it worse from here," and 10% go ahead and make it worse.
I think I am at single digit MPG in my 76 Ford pickup. Luckily I only drive it a couple hundred miles a year.

Trav, you have a Sequoia, right? I have a friend who wants to sell me one (2003 with ~200K miles) that their family is done with. Thinking it would be a decent second vehicle. Big enough to haul all the kids if needed, 4WD if we get a bad winter, big enough for my wife to haul her biscuit stuff, etc. Would you recommend it?

Yes, 2003 with ~275k miles. Mine has been great and continues to run strong. It has a 2" lift and big tires, which I don't recommend unless you're going off road. Getting approximately 14mpg highway and 11mpg city. They're good trucks and lots are still on the road.
