White background with amber-ish (peach) AND phosphor green type worked well for me in the web era you like. Did a couple thousand per month in hotel bookings in its heyeday. Ask the Vikings.
Ugly Sites SellTM --but Le Monde presentation isn't ugly, just 'flat' and 'old'. Maybe it works better on a phone?

I always had Le Monde in my feed to get a non-US perspective. The English version seems to be much more US-oriented, which reduces its value to me.
