Looks like somebody read EG's post from a while ago...

Recently heard on a podcast: "If your your job can be done from Boulder, it can be done from Bangalore."

That said, from my experience working with developers from placed where English isn't the primary language can go very wrong sometimes.  It's an overhead that often isn't calculated.

I think you're right that directly hiring remote can be hard and the language and time zone issues can cause a huge amount of friction, but for services that can be commodified, it basically becomes a black box - send in your radiology images, get back a report.

I think it's similar to AI - some tasks seem really complex and hard because it takes humans years and years and years to develop the pattern recognition skills to do the work, but computers are really good at pattern recognition. So if your job depends on pattern recognition (not to pick on diagnostic radiology again), you're kinda hosed.

>Boulder

I think my original comment was "Tahoe" after someone told me how great it was that he could work from Tahoe now. That said, so far, none of the remote workers I know have been displaced.

My nephew is smart: he is part of a small young company (I don't say startup because they don't have and don't seek VC money - they just do actual for profit work the old fashioned way) that is entirely government contracts, often with sensitive info. That means the workforce can't be outsourced to, say, China :-)

Quite often the people in a far away land want the same range as more domestic sources

US, UK?, EU? : Keep in mind that using foreign workers circumvents mandatory benefits and tax reporting (1099s, W2s in the US).  You just expense it off. That was a major reason I went with VN for custom web software.

Currently, first world small & medium businesses don't have a good foreign remote worker job board.  Recruiting through social media takes too much time.  That'll change.

Was talking with an Indian-born friend the other day. He recently traveled home. Said he couldn't believe the incredible rise in prices, from food to Real Estate. Some home prices in desirable areas are already comparable to US cities.

US dollar strength means UK/EU remote workers would be 30% cheaper since 5 years ago when paying in dollars.

Reminds me of working with ciml and he had content written for UK airports and methods of transportation away from them. Had outsourced eastwards and one of the sections written was rickshaws from Heathrow. Was 20 years ago though, Cultural/language differences are no doubt shrinking - maybe still important enough to be looking closer at hand.

I was talking to an Indian a while back with an engineering job in a low-cost area of the US. He was looking into moving back to... Bangalore I think. He said it was out of reach for him now because if he sold his US house there was nothing decent in that price range in India.

The boom in India is likely to continue.  So many OEM's that supply the US and West are shifting their manufacturing base to India from China because of political and supply chain issues.  This will go on for years.

Now comes word from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that productivity plunged during the first half of 2022, down by the sharpest rate since the 1940s.

QuoteSome managers are even responding to the changes by imposing productivity-tracking software on employees

It reminds me of the sign: "Notice: flogging will continue until morale improves."
