It used to be that anytime someone started a sentence with "You know the TV ad where..." I could just cut them off and say, "No." Unless that ad came out before about 1980, I didn't know it, with a couple of exceptions.
Recently, we got together with someone we had not seen in years who kept saying, "You know the meme where...." The answer in 100% of the cases was "no" and the eventual followup question was "Where do you find these things? How do you encounter them?" He didn't really have an answer. They are apparently just out there. Everywhere. Everyone knows them.
So yes, I don't know who any of these people are or their associated memes or ads. My pop culture knowledge was always poor - I listened, for example, to the music of older siblings rather than what my peers were listening to (but hey, I was listening to Dylan, The Band, CCR, Beatles and they were listening to, among other things, Foreigner, so I stand vindicated on that one). Now my pop culture knowledge feels almost as bad as that of my 93yo dad. Probably worse. At least he watches broadcast TV.

As a father of four aged 10-24 I definitely could relate to this topic. I never did try that hard to stay current.
I hope they are merciless with their eye rolling as they learn just how many things dad has never heard of :-)
