Title: Tricks to get Clicks
Post by: agerhart on November 05, 2010, 09:53:46 PM
We have a lot of traffic on our main property and so our main focus right now has been monetization via leads.  Since a lot of traffic has been general we are trying all sorts of shit in order to see what will resonate with the audience.

Part of this has involved getting more creative with our lead gen ads.

We've tried all sorts of shit but the best performers so far have been:

- ads that engage the user:  show them a poll or question...polarizing ones do particularly well
- animated ads: blinking buttons, flashing stuff, etc.
- single frames:  show the good stuff in the first frame...get their attention quick.  Multi frame ads tend to lose the user
- celebs: put a picture of George Clooney in one of our ads and CTR skyrocketed
- scroll bars: took the same ad with Clooney and added a scroll bar...went up even higher!

What have you seen work well?

I know there have been some studies with Facebook ads showing that ads with cleavage get a higher CTR.

The flashing/blinking ad part makes me sad inside. The cleavage part, not as much. ;-)

QuoteThe flashing/blinking ad part makes me sad inside.

I know, sorry :)

Also found the same with pops.  Everyone claims to hate them, yet they are still effective at converting users.

Oh and I forgot to add the other one:

- Ugly ads seem to work better than the polished ads

I've come to the conclusion anything that annoys the fuck out of me must convert well. lol Hate flashing/blinking, hate fake interactive, hate pop up/under, hate amateurish ugly ads.

So, if I really wanted to go out and make some money with my own sites, I'd have to make sure all of my marketing pissed me off just looking at it. lol

So. there we have it ladies and gentlemen - our own in house conversion predictor.

Simply send the link to Teresa, and if she likes it - rebuild and try again.

Your sites are pretty plug-ugly Colin, so yes, I'd wager they convert well. hehe

LOL - yup, some of my markets respond pretty well to using 'inverse authority' to scare them through the ads :)

The eye is drawn to to movement and colour. When you say "ugly" do you mean lots of high contrast colours, that kind of thing?

Found that too. Added an Aweber email pop to a site and sign-ups increaed at least 100% - got some hatemail, but the increase clearly out-performed the bitching.

Got it showing only once. Tempted to let it rip once every week, but not there yet.

>pops

You guys aren't the only ones. I'm seeing a crapload of pops and exit consoles now on mainstream sites.  And leaderboards that take up everything down to the break.

Ha, that's pretty awesome Andrew. Best I've seen since regular graphic characters.

Just wait until the Google E-209 infrastructure update. They are just going to wire Matts brain to a datacentre

You have 20 seconds to comply
