This does not go how you might think it would based on MS's previous trial that quickly devolved into racist ranting. It seems they've put some safeguards in place.
(I had never heard of Semafor prior to RC's recent post... they have some good stuff and very light on ads compared to most journalism)
I have to say, more and more I am trying searches in Bing and Google. In the past, this always brought me back to Google, especially for any obscure topic.
Recently, it's more likely to be a tie and on a recent obscure topic, Bing was the hands down winner. I don't think this has anything to do with the AI hype. It just returned more relevant results. In particular, I was looking for info about a travel destination and what climbing gear I would need there. The Google SERPS were completely and utterly polluted with people selling services who often have a section on the gear they provide. The vast majority of pages though were for non-climbing services and even for the climbing guide services, the information is irrelevant and doesn't answer my question. The Bing results did a better job of non-commercial results like a forum post from a UK climbing club and things like that.
I will say that I started the searches in French and both seemed to struggle to understand the question. When I switched to English, Bing crushed it, but Google gave me answers pretty much like it had been giving in French.
That does make me wonder whether the Bing algo is drawing on the AI learnings in some way, which generally are much stronger in English.
If I were Google, I would be scared. If I were the person who told Google they needed to launch their own browser where they could control the default search, I would be gloating. I would say the only reason I haven't switched to Bing as my default is because I have not bothered to change the default address-bar search on my browsers.
That said, Edge is actually a decent browser. I don't think it's a top-2 browser, but unlike in the past, if you have Edge there is not an imperative reason to switch.
