The medieval alchemists might have gone for it though. Mostly they were not looking to get rich, they were looking to achieve other things - immortality, spiritual advancement.
A famous alchemist shows up in the records of the tribunal I worked on. Total charlatan who shows up for deceiving a young girl into believing he was going to marry her. He was not yet a famous alchemist, but a dozen years later he pops up saying that he has perfected the Philosopher's Stone, promising everlasting life to those that would follow him.
