It is already one of the largest search qualifiers.  Why not get in the game?

A lot of its success as a serp target should be attributed to its forum-like format.

Reddit's current internal search engine is quite limited.  I am sure all of us have used google to search within Reddit because the internal search is not up for the job.  Imagine how good it could be, particular if it let you search between curtain date ranges and limit results to types of media and/or external sources.

Related: The voting system could be used as a type of filter for quality of external links, with plenty of caveats due to hivemind voting patterns.  I've thought that Reddit with a good search could double as a type of modern DMOZ if thought out.  This might be an interesting application for AI to eliminate redundancy.
