These are incredibly frightening times. Horrific.
Meanwhile, I had dinner with someone from Portland last night. She said that what she sees on the news is completely different from what she sees on the street. Basically, Portland is mostly calm. She said there are only one or two places that she feels uncomfortable walking alone at night and that mostly when she goes out around town people are sitting around at outdoor cafes.
She said, "It's not like Chicago." Then she realized that she was basing that on the news and realized that is probably not true of Chicago either.

"If it bleeds, it leads." That's the old adage about front page headlines, which still holds today. Bad news makes the clickbait headlines. Whereas a bunch of people sipping coffee at an outdoor cafe just isn't news.
