Title: LPJ asked for an autonomous driving crash report.
Post by: rcjordan on December 20, 2025, 04:19:35 PM
TLDR; Don't use Tesla, Travoli

Be sure to read "Issues Under The Surface"  --it covers some very important safety system info that I've not seen before.

When compared to competitor Waymo, the results are striking. Tesla's autonomous vehicles have driven about 250,000 miles since June, while Waymo's have logged more than 125 million. Based on those numbers, Tesla Robotaxis have crashed roughly once every 62,500 miles — while Waymo vehicles average one crash every 98,600 miles, despite having no human safety drivers onboard.

New report reveals shocking comparison between Tesla and Waymo — here are the details

Waymo and Tesla's self-driving systems are more similar than people think

San Fran has had a major power outage.  Bsky;

"So we found out today in San Francisco that autonomous cars don't work in a blackout (Waymos shut down, wherever they were, all over city)

Participating in live experiments is fun! I still wish I'd been asked beforehand. But it is pretty wild and kind of cool to see them discover their edge cases."

---

"The great thing about a near city-wide power outage is all the stupid driverless cars don't know what to do in the dark and are blocking intersections all over the place."

That is fascinating. Apparently there were two main causes.

First, the traffic lights were out and Waymo does not know what to do at an intersection that has neither stop sign nor light. Humans figure it out, though you would still get massive traffic jams. Even I can figure that was a likely problem.

The second is something I wouldn't have thought of because of how things work here. When power goes out the router powers down and we are back to the 20th century. Landline only.

Obviously I know intellectually that is not how it works in most places now, but having never lived in a place with cell service, I am blind to certain things.

It didn't occur to me that in the city, everyone lives near a cell tower that has backup power during an outage. So when their home power goes down, all their cell-enabled devices switch to the cell system, which gets saturated with 130,000 households suddenly connecting, and Waymo can't get data service and can't troubleshoot or bring in remote human operators.
