This is something that has come up in reporting about the killing of Khamenei

In 2003, they tried to kill Saddam Hussein, but they couldn't track him. Since then, the explosion of the IOT and the ability to process that info has made it much much easier.

As one report said, the old-school tapping of Angela Merkl's phone by the NSA now feels like quaint spycraft from the Cold War in the wake of the Maduro kidnapping and the Khamenei killing.

"Now the police dreams that one look at the gigantic map on the office wall should suffice at any given
moment to establish who is related to whom and in what degree of intimacy; and, theoretically, this
dream is not unrealizable although its technical execution is bound to be somewhat difficult."
  -- Hannah Arendt, 1951.

Of course, she couldn't imagine a world in which the police would be buying the tools from corporations who reserve the best tools for themselves.

QuoteWarrantless Surveillance is entirely legal and artificial intelligence is reading your data, learning your routines, and creating a profile of you to eat away at your privacy.

AI predicts if "people like you" are a threat and flags your "unusual" behavior to authorities. It is being used to influence your future.

Learn about the ways AI-powered surveillance impacts your life and community. Learn about the ways you can fight back.

This really reads like the opening of a science fiction piece.

Now that you mention it, I feel like it could be the opening montage of a 90s movie as it scans either a gleaming city or a Blade Runner slum as the screen shows...

"In the year 2026, warrantless surveillance..."
