Title: Anybody using stand-alone digital calendars?
Post by: rcjordan on June 07, 2026, 11:32:28 PM
LPJ keeps a paper calendar for me to reference my many, many appointments & her schedule.  I saw a recommendation for digital calendars like below & thought that might be easier.

15.6" Smart Display–Install Android Apps|Google Digital Calendar

The more popular brands use an E-Calendar app to sync with google calendar BUT that means giving your google account credentials to a 3rd party --not a good security idea.  So the one above uses google's own app so you stay in the google ecosystem.

But I was hoping to find one that just used the wifi LAN and didn't phone home. I went to Gemini and asked --no luck.

Gemini did, however, suggest using an Ipad (we have that old one) and load the Ipad Google Calendar app and lock it on screen.  I'd wanted a larger screen but this might be  a good start.

In theory, some (all?) android tablets that can load google apps might work.

Here's what Gemini also suggested:
If you want the largest screen and total control over the exact app being used, go with the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+. $200

If you decide to go with a tablet, I can find some flush wall mounts and right-angle charging cables to help you set it up.

I have a paper calendar on the wall next to my desk.

My wife looked at it the other day and said, "It probably wouldn't help if I put an appointment on your calendar, would it?"

I looked up and it was still on October 2025.

Yeah, that's my problem. I just never look at her calendar unless, well, she goes missing on a trip to Disney or somesuch.  I should listen more, hhh.

I'm not keen on the idea of a digital calendar, either. It just adds another tech dependency.  Hell, I don't even look at my own G calendar, I set it up to send me an email.

Same. Meanwhile, my wife's Google calendar looks like she's playing Tetris. Different colors for different categories of activity all fit together in blocks.
