Title: Fbook tinkering
Post by: edo on September 21, 2011, 08:51:12 AM
I see Fbook have made quite a few changes this morning. Lots of emphasis on top new stories in your profile and quite heavy promotion of the ability to separate your friends into levels of aquaintance. Clearly the latter is a direct repsonse to Google+, which surely must now be even more dead in the water than it already was.

Weird. I've been seeing these changes for about a fortnight. However ther is 1 difference for me today: I got the banner announcing the changes to the news feed - 2 weeks after seeing the changes.

It sounds a bit like the handling of what is a top story may have changed a little. It's been bloody annoying for me as the top story has been staying in place for quite a long time, so when you come back you have to scroll past it.  From the info page it sounds like that no longer happens (hope so - it is shit - especially on mobile).

Is the ticker new for most people as well?

This was FB's big, long awaited rollout of a major redesign of the user's profiles, timed to coincide with its f8 developer conference this week. The profile changes are part of a an even larger push, that includes a music and media platform, and I believe will culminate with the launch of their HTML5 App store, code name 'Spartan'.  We already saw (and bitched about) a new App viewer which rolled out a few weeks back.

The idea is access to more content from one page.... mouse over smaller items to drill down without leaving the page.

Rooftop, you just happened to be testing the new additions without knowing what they were.  In fact many people tested at least one aspect of the new look, prior to it's release.  I have 2 profiles (one for testing my App) and occasionally I'll see differences between the two and it is what keys me in that I viewing a test, rather than a permanent rollout of new features.

...not coincidentally, I see today Google has now opened up G+ to those (like me) that didn't already have an invite. Maybe this happened a wile ago but today when I go to google I get a huge arrow pointing to a new link in my nav at the top that says 'You+'.  I figure most of you guys may not know that since you already got invited before, but it looks like G wanted to steal a little thunder in the media.

Nah, I saw a headline somewhere yesterday that they were going to lower their standards and let dogboy in.

They will have to wait their turn; I'll get around to them when I'm ready.... there is still something to be said for being casually late:)

Sadly, I'm not the one.  I think I put it in the quotes thread, though.

Yeah, but I do think a little disclosure is nice ...unless I'm the one having to disclose.

>you're the product being sold

True, however, if you displease the product too much you may end up with decreased inventory.

Hmmm, I was thinking of leaving, but perhaps I won't now.  ;D

On a more serious note, there may be some censoring going on. A good friend (on and offline) started a thread linking to the third image DB mentions above. Said thread has now disappeared without said friend's knowledge or action. If that kind of thing becomes prevalent and gets out to the media ...
