Title: Miami to New York Roadtrip
Post by: ukgimp on October 02, 2011, 07:25:07 PM
Considering driving the route. I have 5 days 6 nights due to other possible itineries.

Anything I should see without fail. I like big views and all sorts of stuff. This is due for November.

Coastal roads are great too.

Any suggestions.

I will take a peek at those places RC, thanks.

>>you,ll stay at my house while en route,  of course

If it comes off that would be cool, as long as Jane can stay too, I dont think she would appreciate being in a local motel :-)

What is your nearest town as I have to do some planning of routes, 2 separate boats to catch (to avoid flying) and all the timings that go with it.

>coastal roads

from mid-Florida to Virginia the only true coastal highway is US 17. Then US 13 north from Norfolk, VA.  I'm not sure anyone could endure that drive (particularly the US 17 part) the entire length without becoming suicidal, though ...hundreds of small towns and cities, stoplights, traffic, low speed limits, etc.  But if you want to experience the coast, that's the road.  When the Vikings and NFFC were here, I put a leather strap between my teeth and drove 17 down to Charleston. It was a great road trip.  But to give you an idea of times, it takes 8-9 hours of travel time, stopping just for fuel and meals, to get from Charleston SC to Norfolk VA.  And that's less than one quarter of the distance you are planning to cover.

I am in Elizabeth City, NC (postal code 27909). On US 17.

Drive 30 miles North of Miami and you can top off your tank with me.... then you can go get some gas for your car and keep heading North?:)

When you heading this way?

Only place I've been between Miami and NY is Washington DC, which I'd definitely recommend is worth a visit. The museums there are the best I've ever been to in the world and you can just turn up and get a guided tour of Congress which is pretty cool.

If I were you Rich, I'd take RC up on that offer right away. That part of the US is lovely, we did almost all of those areas and doing it you would experience the local US. Spending a night or two at RC and Louise place is something you wont regret either :) Wish I had the time to join you!

Yeah, I think I'm with RC...

I hate to say it, but the quick route I-95 straight up to NYC can be driven in 22hrs, and I'm afraid it is not a scenic route on my Road Atlas, nor in my mind.  So depending on the purpose of your ride, I would just try to get to cities and towns you would like to explore.  Personally, I might even swing wide West and go up through Atlanta and into the Smokey/Blue Ridge Mountains and then run them NE for a few hundred miles, but that might just be me, and you'd miss RC.

But definitely let me know as soon as you firm the dates up.  I'd offer you a place here but I might be heading up to PA supposedly later in the month to go hunting and spend some time with family up North, but if the timing is right, I have a few spare rooms.

>through Atlanta and into the Smokey/Blue Ridge Mountains
This is my side, so you'd get the adventures of snipe hunting & gun collections.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is pretty awesome.

If you come this way, it's a royal pita to go to RC though. "You can't get there from here."

>The Blue Ridge Parkway is pretty awesome.
My thoughts exactly.

Personally, I might spend a few days in Florida, a few in the Mountains, D.C. (if you haven't been there) ...then 4.5 hrs to NYC. If you want to drive, go West of the Rockies/North of I-80... that's good driving country. But in the SE, it's not about going anywhere, it's simply about staying put, if that makes sense.  Traveling is more about just getting somewhere else you want to be, but it is not an event in and of itself, like it is out West.

My disclaimer obviously is that I was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Pennsylvania, so driving through the same range further South isn't a far stretch of the imagination for me:) That, and I went to high school a few blocks away from the Capitol building in D.C.

> get the adventures
You really got to get off 95, and up somewhere high, like the mountains, before you can see anything more than a flat highway in front of you, and unremarkable trees on both sides. I don't know. Down where I live, it's an endless summer and the highways are all the same - flat and straight.  So driving sucks, both from a fun factor and a safety perspective, and a safety perspective - Miami to West Palm claims more lives than any other section of the same road (which goes all the way to Maine, in the far North East.)

Washington D.C. is pretty cool.  The Air and Space Museum was fantastic for me.  Worth spending a day or two there.

Cape Canaveral, FL. If they haven't dismantled it yet, the place is worth a stop. Tons (literally) of old rockets and space capsules lying about the place.  I also like driving the coast in that area "Highway A1A" or at least I think it's A1A --undeveloped, well, by Florida standards it's undeveloped. Anyway, it's been years but it was a good visit.

Kind of a kitschy theme park now, but the glass-bottomed boats of Silver Springs, FL are fun.  Also, the countryside north of Silver Springs is unlike the high-density resort coast --mostly grasslands, pastures and thickets.

You should also consider heading west out of Miami across the Everglades http://www.nps.gov/ever/ then over to, say, Arcadia, Florida and then up to St. Pete and Clearwater. The area around Arcadia is actually one of the few places in Florida I really like. Ranch land and citrus groves  ...miles of them.

SC: Add Beaufort & Hilton Head
==>     *GEORGETOWN* -eat lunch at Thomas' Cafe (order fried green tomatos) and dinner at the Rice Paddy

NC: Southport

>consider heading west out of Miami across the Everglades

Yeah, I'm not sure what to say here.  It all depends on why you picked Miami.  If it was just because its a big airport, that's one thing. But Miami and South Beach are the equivalent to a NYC in that 'living life large' type of way, except it's even more hedonistic. Lots of drugs, lots of clubs, lots of beautiful people, in beautiful clothes, driving outrageous cars, reeking of money - I don't go there. Lauderdale is much more chill, much smaller, calmer, more normal... and it still has pool partys and enough lunacy to last me a lifetime, or another 5 years, which ever comes first:)

So if you like the Miami scene, soak it up, because once you go North it changes dramatically.  If you just need some beach, the West coast is mellow/do everything RC said. Or go Miami -> St. Augustine, then you have to make up your mind whether you want to go up into the hills, or stay along the coast.  Let me warn you though, the Florida coast can be driven next to... once you get above Florida, its not like you can drive right along the beach... lots of 'ins' and 'outs' and rivers and such, breaking up the shore.
