Title: how true is this facebook invasion stuff?

If the comments about FB compiling connections by pulling in and then cross-referencing contact lists are even just marginally true... wow.

Interesting thread.

The address book upload is the kicker - FB gets all sorts of leads based upon email addresses in your address book.

I never allow 3rd parties to access my address book.  If they want that they can buy it... and add enough to cover any potential data protection issues I might encounter!

People are so willing to sell out theircontacts.  It's as bad as the idiots who can't BCC when they send out mass crap emails.

Facebook
Apple
Google
... all as bad as each other.

I don't think it matters how many of us 'techies' talk about this, or how loudly - the general public just doesn't seem to care to what extent they are being 'farmed'.

Its very depressing.

I have never given FB my address book and I block pretty much all apps, but since other people do this and I appear in their address books (evidently), I'm always getting friend suggestions from, for example, people who were one-time customers at our vacation rental.

As long as other people are willing to give away their data because they got asked, you can't stop this by keeping your address book private.

The one thing you can do is register with a FB-only email address: ergophobeFB@yahoo.com and then I expect this would stop working.

Hmm. This just happened to me on linkedin.

The only way this guy can be popping up as a suggested connection is because I'm in his email address book. Pity because their suggestions are normally pretty good....

I have never trusted my login to any of these  third party sites. Would be a real problem, some unsavoury characters reside in my old contacts and I would not like them to get a FB invite from me hehe

yeah, I think these guys are all dirtbags too but by the same token, it IS a social networking site.  I'm not quite sure why everyone expects so much privacy.  About the last thing FB is, is a place for you to privately communicate with a closed loop of like minded individuals who put a premium on their privacy.  I mean there are some tools for this type of thing, but my thoughts are that you are trying to get that zebra to change it's stripes.

It's a public social networking site that touts its ability to let you 'discover' all sorts of things, including personal preferences, friendships, communication between mutual friends, etc... why are people so surprised?  It's not like they built this and called it 'the ultimate personal fortress of solitude and privacy'.  When you use a site like this, you are in public, and what you do and say is public, and it is recorded by 'Big Brother'. If this bothers anyone, they should stop using it, instead of complain about it's fundamental nature.
