Title: DHTML/XHTML pop ups?
Post by: I, Brian on March 18, 2012, 01:43:52 AM
Apologies for asking a dumb question, but I'm looking to set up a fairly low-intrusive pop up for visitors to a domain, asking if they want to download a PDF magazine.

I've never really tried pop-ups before, and know pop ups as new papges are required as evil and sometimes blocked.

However, have never tried low intrusive pop ups within the page code - think I've seen them described as DHTML/XHTML coded??

Bit lost here so am looking for a fast track to learning to use them.

You'll have more luck searching for 'modal box' or 'modal overlay'. It's usually a hidden div that's positioned over the top of your page content. The path of least resistance is jQuery. Lightbox and Thickbox are two of the plugins that specialise in this functionality. Alternatively, there are overlays built in to JQuery Tools and jQuery UI.

maybe customize ibox. Seems fairly lightweight and straightforward.

If you're on Wordpress, PopUp domination could be an option:

I tried a few WP plugins, but they conflicted with the jquery already used on the site so wouldn't work.

Tried a few modal box downloads and tutorials, but they seemed to presume an understanding of how to code Javascript.

In the end have given up, and have simply added a little box advertising the free magazine download at the end of everything article.

Might work better as less intrusive ... ?

I've used PD a lot and it does increase the sign-up rate massively. The pop-ups are intrusive as hell, but works wonders.
