Great find. I have noticed the speed improvement already.
I got to looking around just now, and Ghostery gives you the option to block over 200 different third-party widgets, ads and whatnot... although they say the block feature is still experimental, so may not work 100% perfectly. I figured it was worth a try.

The Ghostery is very nice extension, although I'm less prone to use it since it has been been bought by an advertisement company. It is true that they said it won't be utilized for tracking data for the purpose of targeted ads, but it does seem a bit speculative :)
On this matter, you may find this extension useful as well - it's called Kill Evil (perhaps it was aligned with the "Don't be evil" slogan..) and and it helps you to deal with stuff like automatic opening of new windows or disabling the right click or even disabling selection etc.

ha! Oh, the irony. Well, if I start noticing Ghostery is failing to block strangely well-targeted ads, I'll uninstall it for sure. ;D
Checking out Kill Evil now...
I think Kill Evil has been on Firefox for years, and it works very well.
