Title: Anybody here use Pinterest regularly? On a smartphone?
Post by: rcjordan on September 07, 2012, 09:09:58 PM
Given our recent discussion of designing for mobile, I'm thinking browsing pinterest would be hell on a small screen.

our new website works in a very similar way. Lovely showcase of responsive design. first thing you think on a phone is "wow, thats a LOT of scrolling". It does work though.

But there's your tablet market..... and samsung screens are going to be as big as tablets very soon  :P

That's if Apple don't through their toys out of the pram... again.

That sounds wishful, Gurtie.  So far, the one person I've found that uses pinterest says she never goes to it on her phone and dislikes it on the ipad. She waits until she's on a desktop.

>scrolling

I hate they continuous scrolling but, what the hell, I'm a dinosaur. I think the layout is ok on the 10" pads but I think the multiple narrow columns would cause the biggest problem with viewing on phones ...or are the reformatted into fewer wider columns for phones? If so, then that would be a lot of scrolling.

NO idea if these work well or not...but this is an interesting list for changing a regular site to mobile.

I interrogated a heavy pinterest user the other day. I framed the question about types of access so as to not bias the answer; 'How do you use pinterest? Smartphone? Ipad? Desktop?'. She literally winced when I asked about the smartphone (she has iphone) and said that would be emergency use only or if she had incredible amounts of time to kill.  She waits until she happens to be on her desktop.

Pinterest app for iPad is not very functional - e.g. not even possible to upload pins, you can just pin things off the web. You'd think with iPad, there should be no issue using it as the screen is not really limiting it - but this app limitation seems quite weird, given that iPads have a camera.

has anyone else tried Polyvore? It's primarily fashion, but increasingly home design. We're having some good (dofollow last time I looked) links from creating some nice boards and other people then using our images on their own boards - effectively we're seeding things people will like to use, rather than really using it to reach potential customers - although that said it's quite nice to use and can be embedded in your own site if you have a need for moodbards etc.

Well worth a play I think (and if you're neither fashionable nor a home decor website, there's a need for decorative touches - plants, backgrounds, curls and squiggles are all much used........)

Surely a place for a very creative approach, thanks Gurtie...
Topics that come to mind include, "a fancy bag for carrying cheap viagra you bought online" and the like....
