Title: Book recommendations
Post by: Chunkford on October 18, 2012, 10:55:52 AM
I'm in a book buying mood.

Can anyone recommend books that have inspired you and helped you in your quest for online business supremacy?

To give an example, I'm looking to get Creative Mischief: 1 by Dave Trott - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Mischief-1-Dave-Trott/dp/095643570X

Thanks in advance :)

Creative mischief is quite good, although the writing style is painful until you get used to it.  It is SHORT though.  I've read longer blog comments.

Short is good as long as it makes me think about things in a different light :)

Any books that stand out for you that you can share?

My love of reading was unfortunately one of the first casualties of my parenthood.

I did recently read "good to great" - having reluctantly bought it after getting bored of people recommending it to me.  Certainly got me thinking a bit and it was better than I expected (mostly because of the depth of the research behind it). However I still fail to why people go quite so mad over it.

This was a great fun read http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boo-Hoo-Dot-Com-Story/dp/0099418371

This was a reminder that what we do is manipulate people http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blink-Power-Thinking-Without/dp/0141014598/

Finally how awesome it would be if you could be a wombat http://www.amazon.co.uk/Diary-Wombat-Jackie-French/dp/0007212070/

Hey, NFFC, what was the name of that 'marketing tricks' book you were reading in Charleston?  I know that's vague, but it was the one about stuff like people believing something if you said it 3 times.  You recall?

Although it's extremely dated and arguably wrong in many many areas, it is still one of my favourites.

Yeah, that's it.

That book gathers together a lot of good tidbits regarding manipul positively influencing people.

I am currently reading The Chimp Paradox by Dr Steve Peters (Team GB & Sky Pro-cycling).  I picked it up as part of learning more about the organisation and systems of Team Sky.

I didn't really know what to expect, but this is not only eye opening, but very useful.

This book is quite good - Consumerology: The Market Research Myth, the Truth about Consumer Behaviour and the Psychology of Shopping

Interesting the way it delves into subliminal shopping behavior.

If you've not read Steve Krug's books on usability, they are quick and worthwhile:

http://www.sensible.com/dmmt.html (Don't Make me Think):  Common ways to make your web sites easy to use

and

http://www.sensible.com/rsme.html (Rocket Surgery Made Easy) - about how to set up cheap and effective usability tests

Street Smarts: An All-Purpose Tool Kit For Entrepreneurs by Norm Brodsky and Bo Burlingham gets my recommendation. I pretty much subscribe to Inc magazine just for Norm's monthly columns. Hard-hitting, real-life, no-bullshit business advice about every topic under the sun.

Thanks again.

At this rate I'm going to have to get a kindle. But then I won't have that perceived status of intelligence with all those good books on show collecting dust. Decisions, decisions.
