I'm thinking of making a ploycarconate enclosure and mounting a 50" tv as an electronic billboard. I'd drive it with a RaspPi --assuming I can get that to run a browser. Content would be local loop, running a slideshow or web pages with meya redirect to next page.

Yeah, it'd be up high on a commercial wall. Creating a target for vandalism is actually my biggest concern. This area has had problems with that off & on over the years. I could locate it inside and perhaps skirt some signage regulations but again the question comes up as to whether or not they'll brick the show window which would cost more than the lcd set-up. That's also why I'd use a polycarbonate enclosure for outside installation --beer bottle shield.

Debbie says it probably will create a target, otherwise I'd be on this ASAP.

I'm thinking of putting a goldenrod type low-density heat strip in the cabinet wired to a humidistat. Maybe some usb-driven fans for ventalion and/or cooling.

The R Pi is such low power draw that I'd just leave it on 24/7 so I wouldn't have to worry about rebooting and restarting the loop. However, a cheap time clock and photoelectric cell would control the LCD display times.

I'm ballparking the whole rig -tv, enclosure, r pi, humidistat, heat strip, thermostat, timeclock, pe cell, and fans- at around $750-850

Yes. It is. We have to fight wet getting into the scale display and it's a real bitch. We've sealed and resealed.

Another thing to consider: are there any sign ordinances where the sign will be? Might want to check that out.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that electronic signs have been put on some sort of extra leash in addition to the already heavy 'traditional' sign ordinances. That's why I *might* put it inside like a desktop and let it show. This site happens to have great roadfront visibility. I'm pretty sure I'd only get a slap on the hand for that.

Got the RPi running RaspBMC. The new release, RC5, apparently has some new bugs they're sorting out but I have the RPi running a slideshow from a thrumbdrive.

Not stable enough yet. Very beta-ish, but seems close to being workable. Worth watching.
