Title: QR Code Killers?
Post by: Rupert on November 10, 2012, 07:03:46 AM
Well it was bound to happen once I started to use them, but I guess they can still be used, but the message can be improved.

I was shown this last night.
http://www.aurasma.com/what-is-it

Now I think the drawback is that you have to share an aura. So to get you logo (Say you point the camera at a Cocoa Cola sign, I dont think it will be universally available to everyone.  Otherwise there would be 150 options for a picture of Nelsons Column.

It seems you need to be a super Aura to have access to everyone, shame for the spammers.

But still neat.

While searching it seems they are not the only ones:

http://blippar.com/

Blippar seems even cooler to me. Not tried to create anything on either of them, but find the ideas exciting.

both need apps, and awareness but if they are cool enough, I am sure either could be augmented into ios.

Anyone see any other drawbacks? My first impression is that with aurasma certainly, I will need to use a qr code to link to the Reality, so its a bit like a video. Also, that Blippars expire, so it suggests they are paid for in some way.

If I were Heinz, I would want to set up a Blippar for Tomato Ketchup, and update it, but never let it expire.

Now I know why Google brought out those dam glasses - https://plus.google.com/+projectglass/posts
Imagine wearing them when using that blippar app. Insane!

The future is going to be cluttered.

That's nuts. They're going to have to go to a Google Goggles format for that stuff to take off. Opening an app on a smartphone or tablet to get that seems like it would get old real fast.

Its very clever.  Does seem like a solution in search of an application at the moment though.

Interesting stuff. This is going to be a massive growth area in two years time. Which Google will no doubt sew up given their strength in search, mobile and (soon to be) augmented reality.

These guys seem to think QR codes are on their way out. Think they may well be right.

Ed, Good stuff.

I think Bussnessinsider miss one use of a QR code, that of adding contact details to your smart phone.

Telephone number, name, as well as URL for later use. You don't need internet for that.
