I need to finally close my old account at westhost. Their tech support is absolute garbage.
Any good recommendations as of late? I've got accounts at a dozen or so, maybe 3-4 of them are really good, but need more.
Don't make me drop my Hostgator aff link ::)
haha, I said GOOD recommendations.
UK?
Vidahost.com FTW
I can not fault them.
Solahost responds very quick and has US based techs. look for a coupon code at webhosting talk or on G. I use their unlimited reseller acct with dedicated ip and it $14/mo.
LM may not agree, but I'm still having good experience with my JaguarPC shared hosting accounts.
<hijack>
JaguarPC are actively recruiting affiliates - in the same manner gambling affiliate managers do, by scouring the web looking for the sites ranking anywhere for hosting related keywords. I've been contacted because of a site I have not been doing anything to for ages - make what you will out of it, not saying they are good or shite, had no direct experience with them, just this. May mean they are desperate to get more sales, may just mean the decided to get more active with affiliates.

Thanks for the recommendations, should have mentioned looking for US.
Will take a look at solahost.
I was with jaguarpc for a few months, they went into never-again pile.
QuoteI'm still having good experience with my JaguarPC shared hosting accounts
Bill actually ended up there many years ago (correct me if I'm wrong) on my recommendation. I used to be a huge fan and thought they were awesome for the price. They bought out my old host who was pretty good and right away there was a big improvement on speed, service, communication, everything. But I just looked and that buyout was in 2002 or 2003... so it's ancient history.
I was still recommending them up until about 2-3 years ago when I just started to feel they had slipped too much and I've been moving sites off one by one and this year I'll have everything moved damnit! I will. honest.
I used to think their support was incredible, but now it's just average at best. They used to not do affiliate marketing at all because the company president said that their cost of customer acquisition was low and they wanted to keep it that way. Seems not to be true anymore. GWT sometimes gives sends me reports saying a site is not accessible and after three tries in 24 hours they are notifying me it's down - this is a simple wordpress site on Jag. Meanwhile, when they did the server migration, they broke all my symlinks which brought a few sites down (they also changed IPs which brought every site down because I wasn't using their DNS, but they had warned me that would happen). I just looked at a new uptime monitor I'm trying (so very little data) and you can separate out the Jag site from the other two at a glance (100% vs 98.98% uptime over last 24 hours)
So I'm just not that keen on Jag anymore. They have *not* been terrible for me and a few people I've sent there are still up and running and have had not major issues. It's just that I think they've become another low-budget you-get-what-you-pay-for shared host which is why people have such "uneven" experience (Bill and I, my brother and two friends running Drupal and Wordpress respectively) have had good experiences. LM and Drastic, not so much. I think it's luck of the draw.
So where am I moving too? I found a deal at WebhostingTalk where I got locked in with these guys at half price - http://vpslatch.com. I'm locked in, so I can't upgrade (except buying extra IPs), but I have a VPS with 2GB of RAM for $19/month.
I've also considered trying (but haven't yet) http://digitalocean.com - but that point you're effectively running your own server. Still the hardware you get for $20/month is pretty amazing.

Yes, 8 years ago...and I blame YOU for abandoning me there.
I don't host anything of consequence on Jag. We've seen what can happen to Th3 Core site when they mess things up. They're dirt cheap for shared hosting and haven't changed pricing on me once since I first signed up. Customer service response times, and the quality of that service, have degraded somewhat over the years as they have grown.
I'd be interested know if there's anything comparable price-wise that also had decent quality service in a shared environment.
1. I didn't abandon you there - I'm still hosting there. It's not been bad enough for me to leave yet, but no longer good enough for me to recommend.
2. Before you go trying to make me feel guilty, I have two words for you: Live Mesh
OK...I asked for that one. ::)
What's the main URL for Solahost?
Bump, anybody know? Is that a typo?
http://solarhost.com/ ???? Their website is basically non-functional. Can you mean them?
Yeah, I couldn't figure it out -- must be a typo.
Anybody use Inode Host? They sing a good song and the prices seems reasonable. US based.

seem ok, but the sites i have there are just static brochureware
I have servers at pair. Anyone tried pairLite (http://www.pairlite.com/)?
Man I love pair, mysql is a bit sketchy, but that's the only host I've had for over a decade that I still lean on.
fluid is in the "ok" group. My steadfast acct switched to fluid (and went from v/good to ok.)
It's just all about getting what you pay for. Not really any winners at the bottom, just a few that suck less than the rest.
Sorry Drastic and Littleman it's soladrive

Thanks Jeff, next cluster goes there.
I was just about to open a SolaDrive account, but some folks at WebHostingTalk said to avoid them as they're selling off their clients:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1257139
:-\ That thread's less than a month old.
Oh my ???
the shocking thing is that they have a total of 138 clients and less than $6K in income. No wonder they want to sell them off!
After much digging I decided to give Hawk Host a whirl. They have a 50% off code that's still valid at WHT:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=972982
It's dirt cheap with that offer. I'll give them a 30 days and see if I need to get a refund or not.
Bummer on sola. Nixed.
Hawkhost is decent, they're in my avg/above-avg stack. Like most, mysql gets bogged down sometimes.
This is going to sound stupid/crazy but I recently got a business account at hostgator. The thing is I was able to get a dedicated IP and SSL working within a couple hours of getting the account. Then I used their auto-install script to get the shopping cart system up and running quickly. So far it has all been very pleasant and hassle free.
I've just taken on a client who hosts at http://webfaction.com and though I haven't done much with them, I like what I see.
