ahh... I think it was a latency issue b/c of satellite. If I do as above and then wait long enough, I get the easter egg.
will it go viral? In only a very minor way. It's cute, not "must post to Facebook now". I'm guessing that in terms of ROI they wasted their money unless they had some in-house intern do it.
Based on what my wife's company (I would think Vogue would be in that size range with a whole, painful procurement process that makes it impossible to get anything done cheaply) would pay for something like that on their site, not worth it.

My guess is it was a bored dev at Conde Naste that installed it on all the groups site's CMS. There was some unsure execs whether to keep it or take it down (as it was on then off for a few hours when the story broke), but ultimately common sense ruled and it was allowed to stay.
It was using the Raptorize JQuery code - http://zurb.com/playground/jquery-raptorize
so the costs were 5 minutes of a bored techs time to install and probably 100 hours of execs time to decide what to do!
