The HP X2 laptop/ tablet really intrigues me. But if I have to use Windows 8, I'll slit my own throat.
I don't want an operating system that requires me to compile software to use it. I just don't. I'm a mac girl and this is the only non mac item that I've seen that actually interests me enough to even give it a shot.
Any suggestions?

What do you mean about compiling software to use it? Not used win8 myself, but some of my team do. I've heard no such complaints.
I think win8 is currently the only major OS that is going to give you both tablet and desktop functionality in one. clever, but it all just seems a bit gimmicky to me though.
You could make it dual boot and put Ubuntu or Mint Linux on it.

Because you're a Mac/Android user or because you're a Win 7 user? Because frankly, the only real difference for me b/w my Win8 and Win7 machines is that on Win8 I have to hit the Win-D to get to the desktop, after which they're identical, with a slight nod to Win 8. And even that inconvenience will go away with 8.1
Now if it's because you just hate Windows flat out, that I can understand. But Win 7 vs Win 8 is just window dressing mostly.
I do have to say that I have not used the Start button in at least 5 years - I have Launchy on all my XP machines, so I've been doing it the Win 8 way since long before Win 8 came out. As far as I'm concerned, Windows just stole the Launchy idea and saved me one more app to install (though Launchy is still better).
Wait for Windows 8.1 to get released on October 17. They fixed a lot of the problems many have had with the current version.
You get your Start button back, boot to desktop instead of that Metro screen, and a revamped internal search that will clear up a lot of confusion.
