Last night I woke up hot and thirsty. Went to get a drink. As it turns out, I have a huge batch job running on my computer. I went to check on it and was literally blinded when the screen jumped to life. I had to shield my eyes and look through my fingers and who knows what effect on my sleep pattern.
So this looks perfect. And perfect timing for posting - I'd seen it before but not immediately after saying "damn I wish my screen would autodim"

Yeah, I just loaded it today on my 2 work desktops. It showed up on reddit and the the gamers were raving about it re eye strain ..and a few about better sleep. There was a hefty dose of "I didn't like it at first but can't live without it now" in the comment stream, so I was prepared. But I pretty much liked it from the git-go.
Like you, just last week I was thinking I needed to go into settings and figure out how to dim down the screens ...particularly when I'm online while the room is darkened.
If you load it, grab the bottom slider and move it all the way to the left. That will activate a new button to expand the range.
I can easily adjust brightness - FN plus F5 = darker. FN + F6 = lighter. It's just that I never use it unless I'm on battery. I like that this is adaptive (honestly I was hoping it worked off my laptop camera and was adaptive to conditions) and that it changes the color balance not just brightness.... I'll check it out.

That would be better but this is OK. And the change of color balance seems to reduce the eye strain pretty well. I found I adjusted it manually during the day just for comfort.

Actually, I think of a key combo as even easier. 90% of the time, for example, copy and paste for me is CTRL-C, CTRL-V. This is more like that. But I guess it depends on whether you're a keyboard person or a trackball person.
But that's as simple as owning a mac... No need for extra applications...
I do miss my MAC at times...
Based on this thread I tried Flux on my Mac and it didn't behave well at all. After I installed it there were horrible delays when the screen would wake up from sleep. I uninstalled it and sleep behaved normally again.

Yeah, lots of bitching in the support threads from Macs. Seems they only updated the Win version.
I'm still using it on the Lenovos (including the one that drives the 42" Sharp TV as monitor) and continue to dim the screen as I become accustomed to the gray.

Erm, I mean a mac can actually adjust the screen brightness to the lighting conditions, by default, without third party apps

I didn't know that... I keep thinking someday I'll switch, but I also keep hoping there will be a good third way (and no, Ubuntu on a PC isn't it... yet).
