I need it so I can install my own PHP library and TBH I have no clue what to go for as I'm a shared hosting kinda guy.
All I know is I want it in the UK, being patriotic and all.
Can anyone recommend one?
Also, is it hard to manage and unmanaged VPS?

I usually go for the 128MB plans, their one is 12 quid a year and they're a reliable host.
Usually I'll install Debian or Ubuntu 64 bit on them and have a shell script to install and compile stuff. As long as you don't have constant heavy usage of the CPU or hard disks then there's loads of cheaper VPS offerings. It's easy to set up LAMP on them (apt-get install tasksel)...
You can usually bring your own license if you prefer Windows on the server.

I don't think you'll get much usefulness from managed servers, both managed/unmanaged will make sure the hardware and network are OK and httpzoom and a lot of the low end providers will still reply to any troubles you have.
AFAIK managed isn't going to help you set up apache/mail/mysql or whatever so not sure what you're gonna get included as help for the rise in price. I guess that's the main difference between VPS and shared, with shared you're going to have Apache/mysql and the usual stuff already set up, and usually cpanel. You can get a cpanel license with most VPS providers if that's what you're comfortable using.
If you're just after LAMP then it's simple enough to set up. I guess it depends what you want to do with it. If just LAMP let me know and I can set it up for you, it'd only take 20 minutes.
For 12 quid a year it's worth mucking around with, if not just to get more comfortable with the environment, if time allows it.

Managed vps should already have mysql, apache, etc. configured and running.
Playing around with something is one thing, but if it is an earner, and something breaks, you can either have someone to call to fix it (managed) or have to deal with it yourself.
Yea, I'm going to signup to httpzoom regardless as I should really play around with it all. And for that price... well I will just have to cut back on a couple of pints down the local, lol

They've been great, though I don't feel like they're zippy.
I have seen a *lot* of people who love Linode and when put head to head with Digital Ocean, they tend to be faster unless it's a memory-intensive site (as a general rule, at a given price point, Linode gives you more CPU and DO gives you more RAM).

34sp just seems a good deal for £15 inc VAT for something cheap and managed to get the ball rolling.
