I feel like if you want to know where things are headed, read the following three science fiction books
Peter Hamilton, Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained (one story, 2004 and 2005) - tattoo electronics are de rigueur
Vernor Vinge, Deepness in the Sky (1999)
Vernor Vinge, Rainbows End (2010 or so).
The first two are fantastic books in any case, but almost everything that gets announced I have anticipated by years just because of how these books shaped my view of the world, especially Deepness in the Sky since I read it first.
I feel like anyone who watches tech or search absolutely must read these books.
