Title: Another UK study says FB is dead man walking re teens
Post by: rcjordan on December 26, 2013, 03:53:43 PM
As part of a European Union-funded study on social media, we are running nine simultaneous 15-month ethnographic studies in eight countries. What we've learned from working with 16-18 year olds in the UK is that Facebook is not just on the slide, it is basically dead and buried. Mostly they feel embarrassed even to be associated with it.

On one hand I'm glad the European teens have caught up with me...but I fear FB will be around a lot longer with the parents/grandparents market there.

FB is probably safe with the post pics of your (grand) kids and cute cat pics crowd for a long time. They don't want to learn a new interface.

Christmas was a good opportunity to pick the brains of younger family members for me.  A couple of interesting social media points came up for me:

1. Uncool or otherwise, they still "get facebook" (ie have it on their phones).
My impression from the grunts and shrugs is that is still the one place to find everyone. They just prefer not to use it beyond almost being a phonebook.

2. Instagram is a social network
I know - Duh!  Funny though - I've always seem it more as photo sharing / blog. However they also use it like others might use facebook / forums.

>Instagram is a social network

The ready availability of cams and stock graphics and images has allowed teens to fashion a high-powered replacement for text and emoticons. Reddit repeatedly and frequently whines that it's devolved into 4chan --all memes and reaction gifs.

Surprised me too. What also surprised me is what they have "taken" from Facebook. I can stalk almost anybody on Facebook, on instagram they have learned they need to cover their tracks better.

If anyone wants the data (as it seems quite hard to get hold of) then I may be able to point you in the right direction.

I didn't read the article but i'm always asking my friends' and families' children what they use, and it's mostly twitter and instagram.
