Title: "Facebook is for old people" 13- to 17-year-olds

QuoteInstead, Gen Z favors Snapchat, Whisper and Secret — ephemeral and visually engaging platforms that cater to the youngsters' eight-second attention span.

The kids I know seem to be into instagram.

Eight seconds? That's generous.

The teens/tweens is our family are all about instagram.
I can't help think that Facebook shot themselves in the foot with the minimum 13 age requirement on that.  It created the demand for another platform for fill the void. Instagram wasn't even an obvious choice, but seems to have filled a lot of the gap.

Well, they sort of have that covered by owning Instagram.

I wonder how much of this is because

- the next generation is different and always will be
- the next generation is young and has a young person's attention span
- the next generation hasn't moved around a lot and they see most of the friends they've ever had every day at school so are less interested in life events and "keeping up" than older people (i.e. those who have started to disperse for far-flung colleges and jobs).
- aren't really reading things that much different from their friends so aren't sharing ideas so much as just glimpses of daily life.

To me Facebook allows me to keep tabs on friends who I don't see as much as I would like and to share things we find interesting in the news.

I think all those are valid points.  I think another point is that the amount of "adults" on FB is stifling to kids.  They can't speak freely when aunt Martha and Grandpa are watching their account.

I'd forgotten that little detail!  It probably still pushed that $300m sale price up nicely though.

I'm certain you're right about that - the truth is that the variety of "friends" on Facebook limits what I say - friends, family, colleagues, young, old... it's more like a Christmas party than the Cone of Silence - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cone_of_Silence

Taking all the points above into consideration, does this mean that, in a few generations time, people won't have the time to pay attention to anything at all ?

What will they be too busy doing ?

I sense a paradox !

Google+ is probably Google's biggest failure to date.
