Title: Heard You Euro-Folks Got Some Snow...

Is everything OK?

Not too bad where I am - we had about 6 to 8 inches of snow, and the local motorway was blocked for a while, but apart from that seems Ok.

I am still hoping to make my 5 hour drive to the 'back of bloody beyondsville' that my wife has booked us into for Christmas.

My real worry is that I may get snowed in once I am there - the thought of being snowed in with no internet connection is a bit of a nightmare.

Still, will taking plenty of strong spirits in case the worst happens - hopefully this will enable me to induce a coma that lasts till the thaw.

Not the greatest weather for an online retailer.

Yeah, got a fair amount again in the last few days. Nothing we can't handle though, we're used to it.

Had a complaint last week from a punter who asked where his order was - apparently he only bought on the Internet because he was snowed in...

Getting some good sledging done.  Lucy and I built a triple jump the other day.

Its a bit thin on the ground at the mo, so could do with more now. (snow that is)   Orders have about dried up for Christmas now, (Last thus night it fell of a cliff for me, but I was not shouting from the rooftops about Christmas deliveries)

so more time to play :)

Anyone who doesn't want their snow & warm weather (-16ºF? Yes, please!) is more than welcome to redirect it in my direction.  ;D

It snowed in Osaka about 10 years ago and accumulated to a depth of about 1cm. The whole city nearly shut down.

Its tough here in Cape Town as its only 26C on the balcony at 10am - it should be at least 28C  8)

Amazon emailed me to inform that my orders wont be delivered till the 31st at the latest... still holding out some hope though.

it would be a lot simpler if people had snow tyres. And brains.

We had to cancel our trip at the weekend, I doubt the builders will arrive today (I forgive them that actually, can't be much fun leading a roof in -9 and snowing!) and we're making alternative plans in case we end up at home (or worse, the airport) for Christmas.  But the sledging is fun and its beautifully quiet. Could do with a couple of weeks of this every year!

That's how Eugene, Oregon used to be. Any snow on the ground at 6am, school was closed and everyone was driving 3mph. Up here? The kids got a 7 day Thanksgiving vacation because we had three days of freezing rain (M-W) and accumulated 1+ inches of ice on the roads. Other than that, they don't even shut schools down if it's -50ºF, unless there's additional circumstances:
Quote
F.N.S.B. public schools are never cancelled due to cold weather alone.  [...] However, sometimes the cold weather combines with icy roads or ice fog to make transportation exceedingly difficult.  In these rare instances, the opening of school may have to be delayed. Only three times in the past ten years have district schools closed entirely!  More often than not, the district will cope with bad roads by starting school two hours later than usual.

Poor kids up here hardly EVER get a day off because of weather. lol

Goodness, you're demanding! hehe Half the people up here don't even have snow tires. And brains?! Well, now you're just being silly. ;)

I know. The brains thing was just stupid :)

Its not the same here as other places though - the comparisons with Scandinavia and Canada etc are pointless - we do have a different type of snow (wetter) although this time its almost the dry powdery stuff, but the real problem is that its warmer here - our lane is dry packed snow and perfectly drivable in any car, for example, but out the front of the house where the sun hit yesterday we have a beautiful skating rink, now covered with an inch of new snow. Cold for us means not going above -2 and that still turns into ice. Cold where it doesn't get above -10 seems to be a lot easier underfoot!

And of course we all act like wimps because we know everything shuts down... I *could* have got the bus this morning, but I'm pretty sure they'll stop running before 6 so I wouldn't be able to get home. On that basis I stayed home anyway. We just shut the country down through some self fulfilling circle.

Oregon was nasty soggy snow... slippery and hard to drive in, because it never stayed below freezing through the day. I remember once in 16 years there when the snow stuck around for most of a week, and schools were shut down the whole time. (We had epic snow ball fight gangs roaming the streets around the University though. Good times. :-) ) hehe

And yes, even solid ice is driveable if it's cold enough. Any time it gets warmer than zero or maybe 5 above (fahrenheit) here? It's just a mess. If only the weather demons could make up their damn minds. :-)

5 above! blimey, if it gets that cold over here, we yelp!  That's like -15 Celsius.

Well, for the last three weeks it's been between -40 and -25ºC here... so yeah, 5ºF or -15ºC would be downright balmy. lol

Holy moly! Soo, you better join Palin for a moose hunt, eh?

Moose hunting season is in September, firstly.

Secondly, if I ever ended up in a hunting party with her, rest assured the moose would not be at the top of my "what to shoot" list. lol

Hehehe, good one Damian.

Took this one out of the office window - doesn't really give the real picture as we had 3 inces again last night.

The leg belongs to a fearless 8 year old girl who managed the sled better then I did frankly :)

It seems everyone here in the States (and Europe, for that matter) got loads of snow.  It's an unusually warm 40 degrees here in Kansas.  And all the farmers are griping that we didn't get all the moisture that everyone else got.

I wish it would snow here. We get a couple/few inches every year or two, usually in Feb.

60% chance for Christmas day right now, though. We haven't had a white Christmas in decades, that would be glorious.

There's  on average a foot of snow outside here, near Lake Huron, Canada... and from the photos I've seen in Facebook, it's been as bad in South East Scotland. I think the main difference is that they're guaranteed snow here every year, without fail... and have the machinery to deal with it. Roads are cleared/plouged in a day.

In Scotland... no guarantee of any significant snow, so no point in having expensive machinery bought to clear it, sitting idle all year round. It's also relatively flat here compared to the hills of my hometown so it's easier to drive around in.

It's been mildly entertaining watching people in my hometown moan about how the council arent dealing with it.
