Title: Official Kinect Drivers for Windows and Ubuntu Linux
Post by: rcjordan on December 20, 2010, 04:19:18 PM
QuoteAccording to the documentation accompanying the downloads, the Kinect drivers are designed to integrate seamlessly with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit only) and Linux Ubuntu 10.10 and later (x86 and x64).

Makes me wonder what the future interface will be like.  I suppose it will be a combination of a kinetic interface and what we use today.  I keep thinking that some day computers will be put on like a pair of light weight sunglasses, where you interact in a virtual space.

Toolman and I did a high-end voice recognition set-up about 10 years ago using Dragon Dictate Pro as the engine.  It actually did a really nice job of surfing without much training of the voice commands.  I didn't like it, though ...turns out that I'd rather spin a tracball and type rather than talk to my screen.  That and other experiments have made me wary of yet-another elegant UI.

Still, this one using the Kinect looks good, particularly for managing a media center.

Yeah, I was like that too, until my elbow gave out on me:

Now, I try to alternate...

QuoteKinEmote is an easy-to-use, free application that takes gestures captured by the Microsoft Kinect and translates them into key strokes that any Windows application can recognize. Users can easily map their own keyboard keys to each of the gestures recognized by the KinEmote software.

Why not just type?  How is it any different?

I guess the lack of a keyboard would open things up a bit. You could define your own gestures. Blind touch typists probably would be better off with a familiar tactile keyboard, but who's to say what a new input method like this could do?

I guess I could see it for people who don't have full use of their hands or fingers...I totally see this as something that could revolutionize input for those with disabilities...but for the mainstream?

Don't all kids have to learn to touch type in grade school now anyway?

Motion & gesture control is cool, but voice command/recog is going to be the game changer. Possibly a combination of both.

Now we're getting somewhere:

Supposedly interfaces ANY program to Microsoft Kinect. Create a socket server, which other programs -- including Flash and Silverlight websites -- can then interrogate. JavaScript could be used to communicate with the socket server without a browser-specific extension.

No hacking of the OpenKinect driver.  The installation process is said to be quick and dirty.

I wonder how sensitive it can be made with the current tech - gesture control would be cool for many websites but the WOW integration on youtube impresses my geeky side because, er, I'm geeky, but on a practical level still looks like you need BIG gestures to make it work. Most real life clients/websites would want much more discreet gestures to make it usable - ideally like using an ipad but not touching the screen.
