Title: Build a brand on a .co?
Post by: Drastic on November 06, 2014, 02:10:59 PM
So I've got a marketing company brand idea, but involves using a .co.

wordword.co

thoughts?

Sucks. Lacks authority. In fact, in the US, i think it will be considered sketchy.  That guy who wanted my domain had a crap tld and regrets it.  If traffic is strictly driven by search, network links, ads --then, *maaaybe*. But it still sucks.

Most Americans will assume .com when they hear about your domain wordword by WOM. They will type in .com.  Unless you are going for one shot, search engine only traffic.

I didn't even know .co existed.

we have one clent on a .co - a multinational in the financial services area - the .com for them is a well established non competing site with exactly the same name.

I was really dubious at first and alll the previous comments stand, however, and bearing in mind this site is very niche and most of its customers hear about it via WOM it does perform relatively well in search (I had thought it might be downgraded as irrelevant)

BUT I do still wonder how much confusion there is over type in traffic.  I imagine many hit the other site first then reconsult the business card. It doesn't seem to impact CTR on paid search but again its so niche that we're not talking to Joe from down the road, and most people probably recognise the brand and not notice the 'missing' m!

From my trash. Emphasis mine.

QuoteI'm writing you regarding you ownership of the domain 4Geeks.com, you see, since I founded my company, back en 2009 i've been watching that you don't really use that domain.

4Geeks LLC is a great company that I have founded 4 years ago, we are a group of 60 developers based in Venezuela trying to build a "developers community" to encourage other developers to build great products and love their career.

I'm writing you to se if we have the opportunity of buying you your domain, we don't have a lot of money, but is very necessary for us to use that domain because people are always making mistakes when typing our website "4geeks.co" (they always put the "m"at the end)/

Thanks for the input all.

This is my line of thinking, but with all the new tech companies and startups around here using all the new, weird tlds I wanted to make sure I wasn't stuck in an old mindset.

I guess they buy them since it's cheap and if they get funding or take off they can afford the .com later.

That's what I'm seeing. Ycombinator's "Show" forum is where I see almost all of the .co tlds. Maybe a few on articles talking about Kickstarter campaigns (though I try to avoid KS, waste of time at that stage).
