Title: Nexus 9 tablet, Google Goes Straight at iPad
Post by: Brad on December 17, 2014, 03:28:57 PM
Google has released Nexus 9 a 4:3 ratio flagship tablet aimed right at Apple's iPad. The Nexus is aimed at work rather than just the passive consumption of media.

It ain't, cheap but it is priced to undercut iPad Air 2.

Here are the reviews:

Android central likes it but does not love it. Hmm.

CNet can't praise it enough.

N9 runs newest Android Lollipop. I just upgraded my Nexus 10 to Lollipop but have not had time to play. Lots of facelift changes.

Anyway if you prefer a 4:3 ratio tablet there is now more choices available.

I'd go with your Debbie's 'hmmmm' and back away.

Let me know about lollipop. Too many android fanbois out there to get a solid review, but from what I've read it looks good.

Looks nice, and I'm a big fan of the nexus devices, but I'd not pay that for any tablet.

Lollipop. It's good, but it's not as revolutionary as people have been trying to make out.  Some nice touches plus my battery life has improved a lot on my nexus 5.   Looks good too if you care about such things.

I like them too, if you are going to buy Android, look at the Nexus line first. But they are no longer bargain priced.

My first impression of Lollipop: I hate the new look of the keyboard! *Really* hate it. My Nexus 10 on Lollipop, still feels faster than my iPad 2 which is starting to feel laggy.

Well it's good for Apple to have a direct competitor because the prices on the Air 2 are pretty stiff.

I swear, Lollipop is faster than KitKat on this N10, points to G for that.  Points to G for getting the upgraded OS to work on the N10.

Lollipop notifications now look a lot more like, well, Blackberry 10 notifications. That's a good thing.

I'm told Lollipop can be locked down for several different users and can even be locked down in re. content, so that little Billy can access enough apps for his homework but not games.  I've not confirmed this personally.

Back to the N9,  I'd wait a bit and see if you can get a deal on a factory refurbished model.

user lock down - I've not tested this either.  Looked interested for tablets though.

Lollipop speed: There are some improvements, but a lot of this is smoke and mirrors.  They looked at the responses of "ooh isn't it quick" to the recent Apple updates and realised that there was no actual speed improvement.  The illusion comes from tweaking the UI, removing delays, making things move faster.  They then built that into lollipop (true story).  I didn't get to feel much of that benefit as I had tweaked up my UI settings manually already and got much of the same effect.

Material design adds to the feeling of speed as well. Things have momentum and move better. I think it helps.

Keyboard - must be a tablet thing. No issues here on small screen.  Swap it if you don't like it.  Plenty to choose from!

The N6 phablet is touting a guest mode, too.
