Title: Where does your state fare when it comes to property taxes and vehicle taxes?
Post by: rcjordan on April 09, 2015, 12:53:09 PM
Sorry, Travoli, VA is still tops on vehicle taxes.

Check out the entire chart here.

California has Prop 13 which basically locks property tax at the value of one's property when purchased.  So, two families will be right next to each other and pay drastically different rates  -- its very controversial, those who benefit from the tax seem to love it, others not so much. One thing it does do though is shield long term residence from the tech boom.

I'm personally benefiting from it because my wife and I bought our house from the in-laws, who bought it in the 80s and the tax burden will roll over if it is sold to an immediate family member.

It's no wonder people keep moving to Texas.

3rd from the highest in property taxes, though.  So even with no state income tax nor vehicle tax, they nail you.  As we've discussed before, the hit tends to average out.

>prop 13

NC tried that 10-15 yrs ago to benefit seniors but it was ruled unconstitutional.

Nobody seems to care about that anymore  >:(

>VA is still tops on vehicle taxes

I should add that I think this is *AFTER* a significant 'reform' of their vehicle tax a few years back, right, Trav?

I know that VA city & state vehicle stickers were huge GOTCHAs ---now just smaller gotchas.

Yes, it is lower than it used to be.
It doesn't affect me much anymore, because I drive a worthless 12 year-old truck.  It's the way to go.

There is a sweet spot though -- Vancouver Washington, a town right on the border of Oregon, next to Portland.  Washington has no sales tax and Oregon has no sales tax.   If you could live and work on the Washington side, but do all your shopping on the Oregon side you could have it pretty good.

This leads to 'restoration' fraud.  People take antique vehicles like Land Rovers and put later model, modern SUV LR Discoveries on the chassis.  Mostly, what they do is swap papers with minimal real changes.  A friend of mine (who does legit LR mods and updates) had a shipping container full of LR stuff impounded while they investigated.  Apparently, it was a big business in several states.

Sure.

We don't realise how "lucky" we are:

In Vietnam...

Sticker price plus 80% import duty, then plus 30% "luxury" tax and then add 10% VAT. Kia's are a luxury car here.

Same for Denmark.  I tell people here about DK's vehicle tax and it's beyond their comprehension.

People move to Texas because it is awesome.  It just is.

You are paid California wages and you have midwest housing prices.  You win all the way around.  And the people are nice and it is beautiful.  And much much less racist and hateful than California IMHO.  Littleman will fight me all the way on that remark, but it is true.

I'm a Kansan, but also a Texan in my heart.

I live in Illinois. The worst state in the US for property taxes, and many other things. I keep saying this is my last year here...
