Some folks will probably get very rich from holding .sucks domains if they are allowed to go on the market. Right now it seems all .sucks domains are pointing to localhost (127.0.53.53).
When I heard about this I tried to think of any reason for this except blackmail and I couldn't. What is the business model other than to force brands to buy these domains to protect themselves? Sounds like racketeering.
Sure, I can register debt.sucks and violence.sucks, but is Ford going to have to spend $2000 to protect every single model of car it comes out with? When it decides on a model name for which the .sucks domain is already registered, will the owner be able to extort huge amounts of money.
This is just incredibly stupid.
I had my company defensively register several .xxx domains for some trademark keywords several years ago. They allowed for a 10 year exemption/block on the names at the time. Now it's gone crazy with .porn, .adult, etc. We gave up. I'm not pumping any more money into this scheme. .sucks is the least of our worries in the domain market. It is close to extortion.
