Title: What's Your Box?
Post by: grnidone on January 04, 2011, 07:42:13 PM
I just coughed up $2200 for a new MacBook Pro when the airport on my old Mac died.  I also run a 3 year old IBM Stinkpad just for link checking and other "robot" tasks.

I refuse to use a desktop anymore because it takes up a lot of space and I don't want to have the "keeping things in two different places" issue.  And, the little Macs I get are usually more than horsey enough for what I need.  In fact, the only reason I went Pro instead of the regular MacBook was because I'm hard on my computers and I wanted the aluminum body.

The new Mac looks like this:

Configuration

    * 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    * 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
    * 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
    * SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

    * Backlit Keyboard (English) / User's Guide
    * Final Cut Express preinstalled
    * Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
    * Accessory Kit

What kind of Box(es) do you run?

Ah yes.  Littleman the minimalist. (You remind me so much of my ex-husband sometimes...he was a minimalist as well...only he runs NetBSD not Linux.)

I'm running 3 4 of these in various work places.  Nice, simple, quick box with a very small footprint.

I use 46-50" hdtvs as monitors and whatever crap keyboard comes with the cpu.

I am willing to bet that my PC is much less minimalist than your Ex's.  I have everything most people would need to get work done on this box, it also works well for entertainment.  I just like a simple  efficient desktop and am not too into eye-candy.

Main machine:

Intel Core i7 920
2 x ATI Radeon HD5770 graphics cards
4 x 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDs in RAID 10
12GB DDR3 SDRAM
4 x Dell S2309W LCDs with ErgoMounts stands
Windows 7 x74

In use:

Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook (Windows XP Pro), 2 x Acer Aspire Revo R3600 nettops (Windows 7 x64 and Ubuntu Server x64), iMac DV400 (OS9.2, 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4), 2 x XBox360s

Retired:

Dell Poweredge 1850 rack server (Ubuntu Server x64)
Celeron 400 desktop with an nVidia TNT card! (Windows XP Pro)

Hmm. That does seem somewhat excessive. In my defence, they do keep the house warm. ;)

Had previously used Alienware but I cannot recommend them since Dell took over.

Currently using a build-it-yourself desktop which saved a lot of money, and a cheapo Asus 17" laptop for travel.  It's prefect and almost disposable.

I just ordered a 27 inch iMac had 2 machines die on me these past 2 months and also an external hard drive which was backing up one of the machines.

I like the idea of having the box inside one unit, I never do heavy stuff like some of you guys, should be good for watching movies on, TV, listening to the radio etc.

I'm considering keeping my Windows machine which I reinstalled everything on (lost a ton of stuff though), and sharing one keyboard and mouse using Synergy http://synergy-foss.org/

I also have a really old Dell which has my accounting program on and it has a 42 inch plasma to watch sport etc. on, it's old so not very good resoultion but good enough to bang out an invoice with and watch cricket on.

Scratchbuilt main system 2 years old:

Intel Core i7 920
6gigs
2 ATI Radeon 3650s
150 GB velociraptor 10k rpm
1 TB network attached backup drive
Samsung S223 multi burner
Coolermaster Case
PC Power & Cooling Silencer PS
Dell 22" center, with 19"s on each side, all on one Ergrotron single pole mount.
MS 2000 ergo keyboard. Thinking about going to the 4000, not sure I'll like the front rest.
Logitech Marble Mouse Trackball. Ergo and faster than a mouse going across multiple monitors. (Spin!)

Secondary slave/spider/etc machine is an old 2.4 ghz single core with a gig, older raptor, one of the very first dvd burners and 20" dell.

Barebones Lenovo notebook, tough and works great but I don't do much work on it.

I wish I had a reason to upgrade, I love picking parts and building them.
