Title: So, True story
Post by: Mackin USA on July 19, 2015, 01:54:42 PM
A friends son (11) picked up one of these (sans bulbs) in a vintage shop in Katy TX. After looking at it, he asked what it was. Was told it was a camera. He picked it up, turned it over a few times looking at it and asked, no lie, "but how do you make phone calls on it?"

Technology :-)

And I look at that and say "Wow! Flash bulbs!" I completely forgot about those. I'm trying to remember the last time I had a camera that used single-use flash bulbs

I wonder how many people under say 30, would know what those flashes are for and under 20, for 110 film?

Digital camera technology is really amazing and I often think about all the wonders the little wizard of a computer in my pocket; but there is something lost too.  I was looking at some old film images of the NASA Gemini mission and the photos seemed so beautiful to me.  I'm not a camera buff so I couldn't tell you why, but somehow film does something that digital seems to lack.

The Gemini pictures are amazing. The have a few advantages though that go beyond analogue/digital:

1. A damn good lens
The lens quality makes an incredible difference to pictures as all the light that is captured has to pass through it. Anyone with an SLR will know how different lenses produce different results. Phone lenses are very small and very crap.

2. Amazing light
Photography is just the art of recording light. The better the light, the better the result. Needless to say Gemini was in a good spot for light quality!

3. A good subject
Obviously a little better a subject than your average selfie

Good digital cameras produce amazing results. I know what you mean though: there is somethung in the flaws of analogue that gives it an edge.  It's a vinyl vs digital music thing.

The person sitting next to me has over 100K Instagram followers and he still shoots a lot of film. He says people can see "it" even if they don't know what "it" is and at least for now for those of us who have lived much of our lives looking at film images, we feel the difference and those images feel less ephemeral.
