Note to self... start on 2017 before Jan 2017.

Damn, was that a bandwagon just go past the door?

Actually no, it hasn't.

If you look at the graphs Glenn has in the article, the search volume for a YYYY term doesn't really take off until late in the year. At this point, Product X 2016 hasn't been released (except maybe cars and a few things like that).

But for other terms - best ____ of 2016, those searches are still 12 months away. It might be getting late for "Valentine's Day 2016" if you don't move soon, but "2016 World Series" is probably just a dribble for people who are looking to get tickets and want to plan early.

Too late for "mardi gras 2016"

---

Also too late for wedding dresses and it looks like 2016 is shaping up to blow away 2015 and 2014 in terms of weddings, or at least searches for wedding dresses

https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%222015%20wedding%20dresses%22%2C%20%222014%20wedding%20dresses%22%2C%20%222016%20wedding%20dresses%22&date=1%2F2012%2049m&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT%2B8

Looks like it's kind of late for swimsuits already
https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%222015%20swimsuits%22%2C%20%222014%20swimsuits%22%2C%20%222016%20swimsuits%22&date=1%2F2012%2049m&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT%2B8

But you still have a few months to get your seed pages updated with this year's selection

Ok The band wagon was tongue in cheek.  I did not mean to be rude, sorry if I seemed so.

I have a number of blog posts planned, so thank you :)

Nice insights. As a user I come across this phenomenon on YouTube, when looking for the latest on a topic. The videos are usually just older ones with 2015-2016 tacked onto the title.

I often have to add a year qualifier (or scan the date in the serp teaser) when doing deeper searching for tech that has reached/passed the tipping point re viability but is still developing. OR when there was a recent convergence with some other tech that was a game-changer. OR those assholes at Verizon start blocking miracasting of NFL games.

Didn't even cross my mind. And I wasn't trying to be argumentative, you just prompted me to ask the question "is it too late for 2016?" and I was surprised how many "summer" terms peak in Feb or Mar.

So not at all... I was glad of the conversation!

Thanks...

I so often use tone in my conversation I forget when typing it cannot be heard.

Well, I assumed irony with perhaps a tinge of genuine regret. But certainly nothing remotely rude. I think with respect to online conversation, I am not very attuned to subtle insults, so if you actually want to offend me, you need to get pretty direct about it :-)
