How outrageous would that be? I wish I was taller so I could ride one of your dual purpose bikes. I always wanted one of those Paris/Dakaar BMWs, with the alum saddlebags. But at 5'7" I am lucky I'm so in love with my bike because I don't think there is anything else that I could ride that would fit.
You know the same guy that narrates this movie, (Ewing McGregor) also starred in another documentary, where he basically went around the world, the hard way, on a bike? Good one, you should be able to find it.

If you watch this movie, I really think it will be. MotoGP is the highest expression of motorcycling. The bikes they ride are the true 2M+USD prototypes that eventually get passed down into 'World Superbike', and eventually to the street. Today, they are are running at about 240bph(?), over 210+mph down the straights, 160+mph into the corners, and have elbow sliders on their leathers because they tip the bikes over so far, dragging your knee isn't always enough to hold the bike up.
The racing itself can definitely have you on the edge of your seat or jumping up yelling, but points championship is another story, that is just as enjoyable on the longer horizon. But for me, I don't know of anything more intense than what these guys can do. Nothing in cars can compare, no Olympic sport, nothing because these guys are literally putting everything on the line for personal, team, and National glory.

agreed. One of the things I like best about their footage is all different cameras they use. This year they added the gyroscopic cam so the entire screen didnt turn sideways around every turn. They have cameras for each hand, so you can see the clutch work, their feet, so you can see them work the gears (note - 1 up/5 down because they dont have the room in the the corners to get their toes under the shifter) plus they have huge boom cranes and cameras right down on the ground in the apexes... I think they do a notable job, actually.

I guess I'll have to wait for the pics, but for me, sounds like you are crossing over the line from 'exciting eco-vacation' into a 'proper adventure', and I've really only had a few of those in my life, at least by my own definition. I hope you do it. Hell, now you even got me thinking about doing it. I wish going into central/south America wasn't so damn dangerous (from getting killed by bad guys) because I swear I'd spend a year driving to Patagonia.

yeah:) My bike can go that fast, but I can't:) Honestly, I know you get desensitized to speed, but I couldn't hold my attention for that long. 60-100mph is nothing but a flick of the gears and one head jerk away. I typically do that when I get on a spot of the highway where I'm clear of cars, and there is a little space before the next ones... then I crack the throttle and let the bike try to pull my arms off. I love that feeling. In fact, just about every time I'm on the interstate I go triple digit for a few seconds, just to get my fix. For me it's like being tickled, but the bike is built for cruising at that speed and is incredible stable. But I rarely get over 110 (...unless I'm on my way to going supersonic, which is anything above 130, out in the middle of the Everglades = swamps/no one/empty straight roads). I've been in the 140s a few times, and into the 150s once. But all I'm doing is driving straight and going through the gears until I chicken out somewhere in 6th, before maxing the bike out.
In some ways, the faster you go, the slower the cars go, at least in my mind.... but in their world, they are going fast, and make turns without using blinkers because a second before you weren't even in their event horizon. I don't know what to say about that guy. I think it is insanely cool, but he should be arrested for putting people in that kind of risk, and eventually he will die, along with his bike, in several pieces over a 1/4 mile stretch, and people will make a line shoulder to shoulder to pick up his body parts.

An added benefit of AWD is that the front wheel does not want to wash out. When a front end tucks, the wheel stalls, stops turning, and begins to push. With the AWD system, as soon as the wheel begins to stall, power is delivered to the front wheel, forcing it to turn. With the front wheel under power, it is nearly impossible to wash out the front end.

I like the 'motorcyclist lives adventure' genre so I read many similar books.
They all have this one thing in common.. the travelers are often warned for the dangers ahead, but almost all warnings appear to be based on fear of the unknown.
And if it is really bandit invested area you ride in a convoy or with a police escort.
I think the biggest danger is crashing somewhere for the same reasons you might crash near home.. an oil spill, a car on your half of the road .. etc

yeah, I even think I know the shot you are thinking about.... bike from rt to left, dude is damn near dragging the knee, but the curb is in his line, so he raises the knee without shifting the bike, and clears the knee shattering curb by about 2 inches, without so much as second thought. And in the super slow mo, it looks even cooler, and you are sure it was exactly as he planned it.

I assume it's because it's dirt technology. I'm not to technical, but it doesn't look like a limited-slip differential, the same way as in a car with AWD, so I don't think you could get away with it on dry pavement without it lurching like an old pickup with locked hubs.

I hear you. Without it, it's like going hunting with someone-else's rifle. You know, I did ship my old bike from CA to FL for $1200 in steel crate which was shipped by air, which was very surprising. The bike weighed 390lb empty, so I packed all around it, including heavy (2 man to lift) toolboxes, etc. and I was still grossly underweight. To be honest, if I were you, I'd consider dismantling the front end, so it fits into a smaller container, and get a quote.
But let's go somewhere else besides Florida. Actually anywhere else. Granted you can ride 12 months a year (I ride daily) but there are no curves and it's flat. Great if you have a harley and want to cruise, but it isn't built for superbikes. I haven't yet got my bike on Miami Homestead track but I now have all the required gear to do that.
The only thing better than Italian leather boots is ARMORED Italian leather goretex boots:) saved my heel in my last crash.

I agree but only when in 'civilized' places. And by 'civilized', I mean inhabited by pussies. However, once I've gotten far off the beaten track, and people warn you, I've found it can be that bad and worse. For example, I was driving through nowhere Canada (NW Territories) and living out of my ragtop jeep. Every time I stopped for gas, locals would come by and give me a word of advice: 'there are alot of bears out there'. That day I took pictures of 3 different bears a hundred miles apart, and if you know bears, it is rare to even see one in the daylight on the road, let alone 3. I didn't stop:) Last time I was in country like that, one jumped into my truckbed, through the vinyl cover while I was sleeping.
My other experience was when I decided I would go to Jamaica, alone, with no where to stay and have a look around. On 3 occasions I talked myself out of insane trouble down there that could have obviously gone very bad for me... I wouldn't recommend anyone trying that one, alone. Not saying you can't but it's definitely dangerous if you are a pastey little white guy:)

There was one view, where they come over a small hill, front end in the air, and then go straight into a right hander. I forget the name of the corner. You see them dropping the front end, as the bike starts to tip, so the weight on the front wheel increases as it drops hard. The curb is just 2 inches away from the same front wheel. How they do it time and time again, I will never know. Amazing.
I took my Godsons to Donnington last summer, (local track) and valentino rossi was there. So some class acts. Charlie said to me after:

I've got a big soft spot for 90s 250 two strokes though - NSRs, reverse cylinder TZRs etc. Things of beauty.
I reckon MotoGP is now as good as it was in the days of Rainey, Schwantz and Gardner. The races a few years ago when Rossi was toying with Gibernau were priceless, and his tussles with Lorenzo last season were just as good. It'll be very interesting to see what Valentino can do on a Ducati this season.

I hate to say it, but I think Lorenzo is going to be the guy to beat, and I'm a Rossi fan. I think the Ducati's are just too unrefined right now, in comparison, but maybe he can tame it.
I really like Moto2 now too, but I dont know too much about WSBK.
I think that's probably Ducati's thinking. While Rossi's certainly not finished yet, his ability to develop bikes is unrivalled, and Ducati desperately need a machine that someone other than Stoner can consistently win on. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw Hayden back up at the front after Rossi's put a bit of work in.
If people are going for bragging rights, I once sat on a bike that my client had made by Orange County Choppers (Big Pauly on the Discovery Channel) to give away in a raffle - and I did it without a helmet! Had a pic at the time but has disappeared.

I know... we aren't talking about the same thing. When I heard you talking about business and overhead projectors, I knew you were in a different vein. Not to say business isn't competitive, because it is, and I personally like competitive high risk/reward work, but 'sports' are different than 'work', even if you are professional athlete and both are one in the same.
This thread was about motorcycle porn... meaning, explicitly gratuitous images and videos of an extreme motorsport. It naturally has to touch on racing and competition, just as much as if, like Damian, the idea is to just make it over a pass in some exotic country and sit on your helmet for a moment to have a smoke and take it all in all.
But it does have to do with the extreme side of things, because that is where the meaning in things like this are obvious. That is why I didn't post pics about people's daily commute to the store on mopeds. It is about that feeling you get when you are on a bike and you feel perfect and everything is in harmony, allowing you to push your bike and yourself beyond maybe what you thought you were capable of.... whether that means committing your entire body to a curve, or making it down the muddy side of a rutted mountain, with the shiny side still up... and celebrating the fact you are in as much control of your life as you'll ever be, for better or for worse.
When I ride my bike, I am deeply involved with the moment. I don't daydream. I don't think about work. I don't do anything but focus on what I'm doing because what I'm doing demands my attention. Same with driving 16 race dogs at night, in the high country. Same as when some guy 10 years younger and 30 lbs heavier is trying to kill me at jiu-jitsu.
So yeah, if you want to listen to the speech and think about 'quality management' training sessions, well, yeah, its going to be completely ridiculous, because you took it completely out of context. But if you are jogger that has trouble getting out of bed in the morning, then maybe you can begin see the truth behind the words and find some encouragement to 'just do it'. But if you are talking about REALLY seeing what you are made of, at the expense of recalibrating your ego with reality... possibly in a way you could be fundamentally dissatisfied with your performance or kill you... then that speech is dead on target. And that is why motorcycle racing is so cool in my opinion. These guys literally risk their lives to beat other equally talented people with the same mindset and goals.
I don't know... nothing really matters. It's us who give things meaning. And I see meaning when I push myself well beyond what I thought was possible. And after I feel comfortable with the 'relative', then I look for the highest expression of whatever I'm involved with so I can pit myself against the very best in competition. Not because I want to beat the other person, but because I want to beat my own image of myself, and live up to my own standards. And in this pursuit, I learn about myself, expand my capacity, make the most of myself and my life, so when I die, at least I know I actually lived. Right now, at 39, I've had a rich enough life that I could die today and it wouldn't have been a waste or a tragedy. Most people have only experienced life through the TV and the movies and their goal is to only get to the next paycheck or the weekend.
So for me, this speech is about life, just not sports. But I find it impossible to talk about competition, without using the same language that's in the speech. It's like in one of the first videos where the guy says, "and if you came in second, you just wanted to kill everybody." No one but a true competitor would understand that feeling because its about competition, not participation. I love racing against people who think this way, and I find it a complete waste of time to race against the guys that think otherwise because there is no glory in beating losers. (btw, that is not directed at you 4eyes, at all)

thinking about quality management at all - I was thinking about motorcycles. I have been a motorcyclist of sorts (nothing with a top speed over 80mph though) and have experienced the 'brown' form of adrenalin - most specifically on the pillion of my brothers modfified 'Bonny' when he decided that making a run for it was better than stopping to answer the nice policeman's questions. He was treasurer of the local chapter of the 'Sons of Hell', and to him it was just par for the course - to me somewhat less so - I'd ridden at those speeds before, but not through the middle of Manchester :)
... anyway... to return to the point - I was
thinking about motorcycles and competition right up to the point where my 'bullshit' detectors went off - second or third sentence, as I recall, something about 'theory of evolution' saying 'only the strong survive' (not exactly true - but a cliche just the same) - after that the rhetoric that assaulted me
forcibly reminded me of the 'gung ho' enthusiasm of a 'quality management guru' - or a 'life coach', if you prefer. Not my doing, the rhetoric took me there against my will.
Stripped of the cliches, it seems to boil down to:
* you need to be competitive
* it can be exciting
* unexpected things happen
* whoohooo!!!
.... nothing wrong with that, but I think it could be expressed better.
I think our different viewpoint lies not the need to be competitive, or in the excitement of a good adrenalin rush, but in the link between the two - and our respective reactions to the style of the rhetoric.
If I may ask a hypothetical question that could throw light on the issue....
Q. If someone taught you a technique that would let you win the IOM TT.. but a side-effect of this technique would remove the adrenalin rush, would you use it, and win.. or would you
not use it, finish 10th, but keep the adrenalin rush.
My argument is that someone who is REALLY competitive would forgo the adrenalin rush in exchange for the win.
(yes, I know the 'win' has its 'rush' all of its own.. but hopefully you get my point )

I worked on a motorcycle affiliate site about a year ago and thought I had better get into the mindset of the buyer (car driver for 18 years). I'm still on my 125cc Scooter at the moment (Sym Fiddle 2, which is great BTW), I'm looking to take my test on a geared machine this summer though.
I'll probably only do 1000 miles a year, but those 1000 miles would NEVER be matched by 1000 miles in a car.

That is indeed a good one, and the subject deserves it's own thread, but I'm afraid this isn't qualify as porn:) Look, I don't know about you, but I don't need a professional athlete to tell me how to be a man. Just because you know how to drive a bike or swing a racket doesn't mean you know what you are doing off the field (Tiger Woods, et. al). This one is about how to live your life... the big picture, the long haul. Indeed something to aspire towards, but in terms of 'competition', the best you could say it was about 'how to be a good sport'. IMO it's also a much better read, because they edited out my favorite verses, but if you want to hear a better one than that, I suggest you hear a letter I wrote my little nephews called, 'The Strong Man', which was my best attempt at passing on what little I know on the subject to them.

Sadly, I have no photos of my brother's bonny - I am sure he must have some, but we aren't really in regular contact much these days.
He went though a series of nice old British bikes, the last one being a Norton Commando, before spending 15 years in the US riding Harleys.
He reckoned, and I suspect he was right, that a Harley is a stupid bike to ride in the UK, where it is wet and windy, with small twisty lanes etc.. but makes perfect sense in the US, where you have nice long wide roads and states with biker-friendly weather.
I think he would still be there now if it wasn't for the fact he got deported (long story - best told over a few beers ;))

that's actually the 'dry clutch plates' you hear making that racket... not the engine rattling low on fluid:) It shuts up some once you get it in gear. Supposedly it gives a 3-4hp back to the bike but requires a stronger grip than hydraulic 'wet clutches'.

With me it's the opposite. I have my bike for commuting: to work and back, esp. if the weather is bad and all of humanity seems to have taken the car instead of the bicycle. That's why I've opted for a pretty boring BMW with direct drive (low-maintenance even in winter with all its salty slushiness) and a slender build (perfect for cutting through congested motorways in-between lanes)

The Harz is a great area for riding fast bends. Wide roads and good tarmac. Only a few speed cameras and they all shoot from the front 8)
And you get to ride the German highway going there (which does not have any speed limits).
My bike has only 50hp but it's definitely an area where you can use more power if you have it. One friend was driving an 150hp MV Agusta and we only saw him at the junctions where he would wait for the rest.

Question for you: how do your tires feel in the corners, on the pavement? I assume you are using a multipurpose tire and didn't swap them for your trip but I guess you could being an amature porn star and all;)
Sometimes if my tires get low and I'm aggressively cornering, I can feel them squish a little under me. Is it the same on your tires?
And on the flipside, when you are in dirt, are they enough? I mean, you can't ask a tire to do much more than you are except maybe add ice and mud.
Beautiful riding country for sure. Florida is definitely great for riding year round but the riding itself kinda sucks unless you are just cruising or going Mach1. It's flat and straight. I miss the mountains in california or PA.

Traction is fine in the bends on pavement with dry weather. It took getting used to at first as there is a little movement sometimes indeed. It's a good warning system after getting used to it. The outer knobs are most worn on the inner side. What seems to happen in sharp bends is the most outward rows of knobs bending more then the tire.. making the bike ride on the inner side of the outer knobs.
In the dirt I think they are fine but I do not have experience with other tires there. In 5-10 cm of mud they seemed to do fine as well.
The worst thing is the wear on the main thread after highway stretches.. it looks like I will be lucky to get 5000 km out of these tires.
Also it makes more noise then street tires.
I heard the tire noise, which is why I asked, and one of the curves made me wonder if might even drag a knee, which was why I was wondering about the cornering stability. I haven't riden a dirt bike since I wrecked and broke my leg in 3 places back when I was 18, and never rode it on the road except just get to more dirt.
As far as 'flat tops' (or whatever you call them) from riding on the straight roads around here, along with power and sand, about 7000 miles is all I got on my first set...

The racing has been IMHO out of this world. Hats off to them. I wouldnt have wanted to race in the wet. (I wouldn't want to race at all)

MotoGP in England and Superbike today @ Misano:). I hear there is light rain at Silverstone.
Valentino wrecked in warmup (and is fine) but waaay back on grid. Stoner is in pole, Simoncelli behind him. Cal broke his collarbone qualifying, so will miss his home race.
Stoner is really shining on the Honda and Vale looks terrible on the Ducati, and not even all that much better than the other riders on Ducati's. That's been a real flop this year. Too bad. But I also think Honda looks great and chose an awesome team and, not surprisingly, has the best bike on track.
Never really watched any of the Superbike. Got bored at Donington after the initial flush of excitement.

Honestly, I follow MotoGP like a trashy soap opera, but after that, I drop off dramatically. I mean, I watch SBK when it's on, but have no idea who is who, or their racing history.
Basically, you have to look at these races like any other championship... there is what happens in THIS race, and there is the points championship in the background... and you have to keep track of both to better appreciate what you are seeing.
Sounds like it needs the sort of time I might find when I retire.....

Looks like a lot of fun. I haven't gone dirt bike riding in ages but use to really enjoy it. I had an old Honda cr250 elsinore, strong engine, terrible suspension.
Yeah, it's a blast. When you get into a rhythm, there's nothing like it. I'm wanting to start working on motocross next.

I submit it to a local general motor video site. They like local rides offroad and some of the moderators there have the same hobby.
Chosing text and keywords with Youtube search in mind also helps.

The music usually just comes from my private collection. Mostly you can use what you like if you don't care about advertising revenue, youtube shares it with the music copyright holders then and won't hold it against you. Sometimes it may cause a video not to play on mobile devices though, that sucks as you only find out after uploading.

With 30+ public videos using copyrighted music my account is indicated to be in 'Good standing' on all accounts.
The exact number of 'Copyright strikes' is not indicated but also says "Good standing". .as far a I know it means zero strikes.
The email one gets after using copyrighted music is usually something like this:

I probably won't upload a video of this run, I was a bit slow being my first time. Plus it has a bad vibration jello effect which I've not run into much yet. The kit comes with a vibration reducer that is supposed to help. I'm going to try it out on my next ride.
Well, I tore my rotator cuff about 6 months ago, so I sent my bike up North, so my old man could at least ride it during the (brief) summer up in PA, so I've been pretty well grounded down here sidelined.

Whatever you do, don't sell, it will be years before you get one back. work out some way of the more miles you do, the cheaper it is, and then you have an excuse to go on the bike.
Before long, you get on it naturally again, and only trips that need 3 people do you take the car.
